You’re really underrating the Washington fan base’s capacity for arrogance, self-importance and self-entitlement. I’ve seen it in my 30+ years living here (as part of the non-self-important population) — when the Redskins were champions. Keep in mind that this a fan base from the politicians, the pundits, the lobbyists, the bureaucrats whose titles are more impressive than their actual importance.

Right now, the Nats are the new big thing. Fans are still processing the idea that they have a contending team. It will take more time (and more playoff appearances). I can see it happening next season, maybe the season after.

I think there is far more “sense of entitlement” with Nats fans then you realize.

As for the comment itself, I don’t think it is that big a deal, but I wold not have said it publically. Say it in the clubhouse, but don’t provide bulletin board material, or added pressure when the inevitable swoons occur

Indeed. We Nats fans are still enjoying last season’s unexpected rise (though not the abrupt end). At the same time, we have not yet developed the sense of entitlement of fans of certain other teams’ fans. Oh, like Yankees and Phillies fans, just to pick a couple of fan bases toitally at random. The Nats are too young and fresh for that. The sense of entitlement (given that Washington is one of the world’s most self-important markets) will come later.

I love the current direction of the Cardinals organization….but I gotta admit, I am a little jealous of the steam the Nats are gaining….looks like it’ll be a fun team to follow for quite some time.

Yes, we know Davey plans to retire. It was in all the papers (not to mention this here blog right here). Davey is saying “World Series or Bust” for the entire team, not just himself.

Nah, it’s just Davey being Davey. He’s been more optimistic than the organization as a whole. Mike Rizzo probably cringed a little when he heard it. Especially the “or bust” part. Davey is a valued advisor to the GM, in addition to being the mamager. But the GM sets the direction, and Rizzo has made it clear that he’s trying to balance winning next season with winning in the longer term.

Davey isn’t really creating a lot of additional pressure. The pressure is there already. The Nats won 100 games (including playoffs) last season, and the team has a good nucleus of young talent. The Nats have progressed enough that they will be expected to make the playoffs. If they meet that expectation (no guarantees, of course), winning the World Series is possible (given the unpredictable nature of the playoffs).
