Your mention of $78MM implies that these salaries are excessive, but you realize these are paid over 3 and 4 years, right? If my math is correct Affeldt get’s a $1MM/year raise, Scutaro gets roughly a $1MM/year raise based on the average and Pagan gets an average of $5MM/year more. Not too bad. If you consider that Wilson’s salary is off the books ($8.55MM) as if Huff’s ($10MM), the Giants are doing pretty well.

In 2014 a big chunk of Zito’s contract is gone unless he pitches well over 200 innings this year. Keep going Brian. With this in mind and two championships in three years your checkbook is looking very good.

I look at this deal like Pagan’s deal: deals that have expected throwaway years. the Giants are paying close to Market price and getting and extra year that if that player miraculously keeps playing at their current level is a free bonus (free because that year’s salary is essentially extra payment for the previous years). Or if the Giants notice that player slipping a year or two into their contract and they spot it quickly enough maybe they can quickly trade them for some prospects.

Scutaro got a 2 year deal worth $20M with an extra probable throw away year and some differed compensation. Which essentially makes Scutaro a $10M a year player. That’s extremely steep but the free agent market for middle infielders is pretty thin and the Giants don’t really have a better short term solution. Pagan’s deal to me is a 3 year $40M deal which is essentially $13.3M per year with an extra throwaway year and some differed compensation. Again, if you look at what Upton and Victorino got, it’s not that far out of line with the Market.

sorry, right field,, They seem maybe ready to go with Blanco in left to keep the money low. They could surprise with a bit more money spent, but not Swisher dollars, I don’t think. Sabes could very well go for a little spend on another treasured vet for left, can’t think of who off the top of my head, how about a platoon with our old friend Torres??,,, If they are done, I am pretty fine with it. I believe that they are looking at long term Posey money as a larger priority.

The money, budget, payroll,,,,, Zito comes off soon, Lincecum needs to put up this season or shut up, take a steep cut or move on,, and the ballpark,, people don’t mention or forget that the Giants mostly paid for the park, and own it, and are still paying the mortgage,, those mortgage payments finish in 2017 and that is a bit more money freed up. They aren’t nearly as set up as the Fodgers may be, but will be fine to compete in the long run.

Scutaro signed was a solid priority and comes in cheaper than he may have gotten elsewhere. Wait to see how it is structured before moaning just a little about the cost of the last year, but this seems solid. Don’t love the third year, not Pagan’s fourth, but that seems to be at least the cost of business this off season. Maybe it is cheaper with a large signing bonus up front.

Speculating about left field you seem to forget that they have their heart set on Pence and a high arbitration number or a few years of contract. What I remember is around $15mil in this final arb year for Pence. Given Victorino at $13, I am suddenly not so pained by keeping Pence at that number,,,, do hope he climbs back on his productive horse after the cliff he seemed to fall from last season,, hehehe,, I do love having a bug eyed dude on the team.

Yes, the Giants do seem to be about set. Pitchers and catchers can’t report soon enough, eh.

Losing him to another team would have been more costly. With Theriot also unsigned they didn’t have an answer at second base. Prospects on the farm aren’t ready yet. They had to re-sign Scutaro. Look at all of the clutch hits he got. The NLCS MVP. How do you put a pricetag on invaluable stuff like that? For free agency, you always have to overspend at least a little. The way the CBA is structured vets who have a little left in the tank always makeout like bandits because of time served in the big leagues. Young players like Posey are the ones who have to wait awhile for the really big payday.Checkout Victorino’s new deal in Beantown. That’s the one that is ridiculous. By comparison, the Pagan deal is relatively fair for both sides.

They may go after someone like Scott Hairston. Swisher is too expensive, and he’d be a total bust at home – not to mention he’s that one clown that wouldn’t fit on this team. They’re also looking into a little more help for the bullpen, like they always are. And this is something they do very well every single year. Their bullpen, top to bottom, is the strength of the team – even more so than the starting rotation. Nice to have just about everything in place before they leave Nashville.

Giants gave $78 million to Affeldt, Pagan and Scutaro. Last time meetings were in Nashville, they dropped $60 million on Rowand alone. Averages per year – Pagan 10mil, Scutaro 6.3mil, Affeldt 6mil. Standard salaries for what the market is without grossly overpaying like some teams. Solid deals.

I’m fine with this and the Pegan contract. After what Victorino got paid Pegan’s deal looks even better. As for Scoots, less than 7 million a year for a guy who has already won a championship is fair. From what I hear he takes good care of himself. (aside from when standing in front of 250lb men barrelling down on him) These two deals are far less reckless than some of these other deals flying around. The way salaries are headed, they will look even better in 2 years.

this deal is a year too long but damn it if the money doesn’t make it terrible…I mean its about 6.3 mill a year, that’s not bad at all if needed they can eat the contract next year or the year after, he can play well look at Derek Jeter a guy who will be 39 next year AND still plays great..scuturo can do fine…not a bad deal what so ever really

I’m okay with this deal. Assuming there’s a signing bonus, that’s about 6 million a year. The Giants won’t have trouble eating that when Marco starts to decline, and his style of hitting will keep him effective at AT&T for at least the first half of the contract.
