Ha ha. This is the best comment so far from the Phils's side. Look: Ruben Amaro (and we must not forget the "Jr.") is a splashy GM. He also gives out contracts that, in length and value, are set at whatever limit they need to be to get the player to sign. I don't see any evidence that RAJ cares much that he's paying guys a fortune at the tail-ends of those contracts, despite the fact that they'll be 35, 36, or 37-years-old by then. And Phillies fans seem to like RAJ's business style, and they've largely defended it on these boards. So, it's a match made in heaven.

Everyone else, maybe, thinks this is a little bit nuts. The Phillies's success came about through some big free agency moves, but it also was driven by some legit, home-grown talent coming into its prime. Now that Utley and Howard are past it, and Rollins is no youngster, it is less certain that they'll have a great comeback by tossing loads of cash at guys over 30 on the free agent market. But then, I watch the Nationals so other than the entertainment value of Phils fans telling everyone how brilliant it is, history be damned, to overpay for 30-year-olds who make a living with their legs, I don't really care.

In the abstract, I do find it a study in contrasts, to balance what the Nats are doing (cheap prospects and a bunch of veterans on 1-year deals) with the Phillies's more certain, but more pricy, approach. I think youth will win more games for the Nationals over the next 5 years, but whether they'll ever rival the Phillies teams (and their giant payrolls) of the last few years is an open question.

Bourn's a nice player, but how do you give that much money to a speed guy entering his 30's?. When he slows down, he loses all value. I'd rather see the Phils go after a guy like Swisher, who can protect Howard in the middle of the lineup.

If they are going to give him similiar money to Upton (we will have to see on this of course) than signing Upton would've made a lot more sense. That team needs to invest in some younger guys and he's made for that park.

Still having Bourn is much better than not having him. It's not my money and their window is definitely more closed than open. Go for it while you can.

Well I will guarantee this Bourne is not signing with the Phillies or anyone for that matter for only 12 mil a year so we can all forget the pipe dream. He and Boras will want more then what BJ Upton got. So look for Bourne to get at least 16 mil a year IMO.

And of course no other teams this offseason are giving too much money for too many years, right? If you've noticed, it's kind of what happens with the better free agents. But don't let that stop your foolish statement based on nothing but your dislike for the Phillies. I'm a Phillies fan and don't necessarily want them to make this move, but too much money for too long could describe 95% of the moves so far. It's the price of doing business.

Not sure Fowler is a worthy pursuit. Home/road splits are a concern.

If you think about it, Phillies are paying Rollins $33 mill for 3 years (with a fourth year that vests easily). Right now, Jimmy is 34 with 2 (3 w/ the option) years left on the deal. Bourn is going to be 30, which pretty much makes this deal comparable (if less than $12 per is the rate for which he's signed). While they play different positions, Jimmy has more pop, while Bourn gets on base a bit more. They aren't worlds apart. Right around $12 mill makes sense. Not sure if it is the best use of money, but I like the idea of Rollins and Bourn putting pressure on pitchers on the base paths. Leads to mistakes, which could be taken advantage of by Utley and Howard.
