In the Royals case, they aren't one or two pitchers away from having a competitive major league rotation. Why trade away what could potentially be your best hitter for a pitcher that isn't going to help too much. Especially if they're merely good, like James Shields, and not elite. If I were a Royals fan, I don't think I'd be particularly enthused, even about a trade for Felix Hernandez. One pitcher can only do so much. Just look at the Mariners. Aside from that, they have Hosmer, Moustakas, and Perez under team control for another four years. They'll have Myers under team control for six. This isn't a team whose window is closing in 2014 or 2015. Who knows what their rotation will look like two years from now.

At some point Dayton Moore needs to pull the trigger and get an Ace for prospects. The Farm system can't produce the pitching necessary to compete. I think Royals fan tend to over-value prospects...because well, it's all we have.

Do I have faith in Dayton Moore's negotiating skills and scouting to pull of a proper deal? No, but it that case the Royals aren't going to get better either way.

Maybe a little too soon to be talking about someone in KC with a gun to their head...but I get what you're trying to say.

I still don't get why they're trying to get rid of the kid so soon, its not like they're built for a long playoff run this next year. Keep the kid around and start building the hyped pitchers in the farm system before going crazy and trading away your #1 chip.

Thank you! I also don't recall seeing a photo of the Royals's GM with a gun to his head and the gunman's ransom note reading: "Trade Wil Myers OR ELSE!!!!"

This is stupid. Sorry all you Royals fans.

I find it hilarious that teams thinking about making this trade are trying to hold-up the Royals for even more talent on top of Myers in a trade for a stinkin' pitcher! But then, if I were offered the top prospect in the game in exchange for a stinkin' pitcher, I'd also think "wow, this GM is a freaking idiot. I wonder what else he'd give me, too?"

Don't trade Myers! The Royals have run scoring issues in the middle of the line up. Gordan leads the league in doubles, but as a lead off hitter. Butler is a great hitter, but has only really done it for a couple of years. The Royals need to score runs. Trading a a young right fielder who can replace a giant hole in your batting order is huge. Myers would play everyday, putting people in the stands. Unless of course you want to see Frenchy whiff all year. The Anabel Sanchez idea is good, not perfect, but good. Duffy coming back, Odorizzi moving up possibly, and the best young bullpen in baseball. The Royals may not compete for a division title, but a bunch of hungry young ball players swinging the bats more freely without being over coached at the plate? I'll take that any day.

As A Rays fan not sure what to think...Can we spare one Starting Pitcher...Yes we can. I do love Shields though and he does love being a Ray also....Do we need a bad badly. YES WE DO. Myers at First. Longo at 3rd. I would def take that.

As a MLB fan and I would wonder why the Royals would make this trade...Your not one pitcher away from winning it all or even your division so why waste a Huge Prospect and 10 million dollars.. Let your kids grow together. Add a few veterans in the mix for hitting and you soon will be there if you have young pitching. Bring back Damon he can be your future hitting coach.

Absolutely. They can pick up a pitcher on the free agent market that isn't demonstrably worse than Shields. Edwin Jackson would be a nice addition to their rotation. What they can't do is go out on the free agent market and pick up elite hitters. We don't know that Myers is going to be an elite hitter at the ML level, but a team like the Royals has to take that risk.

The Royals would be much better off making an effort to sign Marcum and Edwin Jackson. The trade market will always be there. Trading Myers would just be another screw up by Dayton Moore.

don't do it dayton! you don't trade a potential stud for a #2 pitcher who will have for just two years tops. as a lifetime royals fan, i'll be extremely disappointed if you trade away such a promising key piece to the future and pretty much will give up and be done with any hope for this royals franchise.

why so desperate dayton? we've suffered this long ... james shields isn't going to be the difference maker and trading myers will seal your fate and mark in kc history. we can wait a little longer dayton, no need to get desperate now ... lord knows we've already been patient for long enough already, a little longer isn't going to hurt.

keep myers! give your young pitchers a chance .... supposedly we have a few potential top line starters still in the minors ... give them a chance!

For the life of me, I can't fathom why the Royals seem intent on trading Myers? Do they know something about him that leads them to believe he won't be a very good major leaguer? If he's an above average hitter at all, being under team control for six years is incredibly valuable. Certainly more valuable than the three to maybe four effective years they will get out of James Shields. You never, ever, ever trade good hitters for good pitchers unless you have an absolute abundance of good hitters. The last time I checked, the Royals weren't exactly running the 95' Indians lineup out there every night. The risk of injury and performance degradation is just too great to be throwing your eggs in that basket. Especially in one that is on the wrong side of 30.

Still expecting them to panic and trade him for Clay Buchholz or something equally preposterous.

Maybe this is the reason the Red Sox have made a couple tossaway trades with the Royals the past few seasons?
