Wow, natstowngreg, you mean that even though the rules say you have to keep players on the 25-man roster all season, teams sometimes negotiate trades to keep the players anyway, and then stash them in AAA? WHOA! It’s almost like I knew that already, and even said so later in the comment thread well before your reply, but didn’t include it in the initial post because I figured you all could assume that!

yeah, Infante can LIDR to SS for Peralta and stick him in at 2b. Based on Tiger fansites, the org doesn’t see him as a COF, just reserve 2B/PR/LIDR

Last season at Harrisburg, Kobernus hit .282/.325/.333 in 82 games. He did steal 42 bases in 53 tries. His Range Factor per Game (RF/G) for 81 games at 2B was 4.64. Omar Infante led MLB 2B at 5.14. (There were no advanced fielding metrics available on baseball-reference.com).

So the kid could pinch-run, but not pinch-hit. He could be a defensive replacement at 2B, but Omar Infante doesn’t need a defensive replacement. Maybe there will be games when Leyland uses the kid at 2B and puts Infante somewhere else. With his speed, he should be able to play corner OF (and I’m sure the Tigers will explore his defensive versatility in spring training).

Wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Kobernus is playing 2B for Harrisburg or Syracuse in April.

Um, the Tigers can’t option them to Toledo. They have to give them 25-man roster spots. Otherwise, they have to give the players back to their original teams. Unless they negotiate a trade to keep them. Or, they get hurt (Craig pointed out that it isn’t as easy to stash a Rule V guy on your DL that it used to be).

He would open up a roster spot by filling the reserve 2b slot that is currently occupied by Danny Worth(less) or $2.1m of Ramon Santiago AND take Quintin Berry’s pinch runner spot, meaning the Tigers could sign a true 4th OF/RH platoon for Dirks in LF and let Avi Garcia learn how to hit for power and work on his eye a bit more at AAA next yr…no point in keeping him in the bigs for 200 PA in a platoon…

Or, they can reach an agreement with the original team to keep the player regardless.

bigcatbaseball they have to keep them on the 25 man roster or they lose 25 k. it cost them 50 k to get them from the team they drafted them from. so yes then can’t put them in the minors because if they don’t keep them they go back to the original team and like I said the tigers lose 25k

It’s not odd at the moment. It’s no secret that the Tigers lack depth, and so having these guys in AAA would make sense. What would be odd is if the Tigers give one of these guys a spot on the 25-man roster for a full season, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Yeah, I mean, it’s nice to have those sorts of play everywhere glue guys on the end of your bench in lieu of some other spare part, but no one should ever be “excited” about them.

It doesn’t hurt to give them a shot if you think there is a possibility of them being good. Try them out in spring training and if they don’t make the team then they go back to their original team. It’s not like they’re depending on them.

Does it strike anyone as a little odd that the defending AL champs are trying to beef up their roster with Rule 5 guys? You would think they would want surer bets on their roster next year as they try to repeat.
