They traded for them. The Mets drafted Lobstein from the Rays; the Tigers paid cash for him. The Red Sox drafted Kobernus from the Nationals; the Tigers traded Justin Henry for him. Justin Henry is kind of a AAA Brent Lillibridge. He’ll be 28 in April.

Kobernus wasn’t the best 2B available in the Rule 5 either – but DET thinking Utility Man and likes his speed. OAK and SD had better 2B’s available..

Think it was Earl Weaver who said, “deep depth.” That’s what the Na6ts have.

It would have been nice to keep Rosenbaum for organizational SP depth. Kobernus has an outside chance of starting for someone at 2B eventually; more likely, he will be a utility guy. The Nats’ organization is stacked at 2B, so he’s not that big a loss. Of course, either or both may return at some point.

Adam Kilgore said that Rizzo and Davey checked out of the hotel before the draft, because they had done what they wanted there. Filled a rotation hole and got a CF. Moves still need to be made, but they can be made later. Rizzo said that they didn’t have room on the 40-man roster for a Rule V pick.

Yes, I was going to point out that per the Tigers’ twitter feed they took Lobstein & Kobernus, so they were wrongly omitted from the list of participants here.

Victorino and Hamilton were also Rule V guys….but since then the rules changed to add one more year of MiLB service time to the requirements to be Rule V eligible, which has really reduced the value of the draft.

Red Sox trade Jeff Kobernus to the Tigers. He made no sense as the Sox have some middle infielders who can’t hit much. With the Tigers, he joins their mess at 2b and has a chance to make it.

Yeah, that seems to be what most teams do. In today’s baseball talent market, $25K is a pittance to pay for the chance to find the next Roberto Clemente, Johan Santana, or George Bell.

[Yes, Roberto Clemente was a Rule V pick. The Pirates took him from the Dodgers' organization in the 1954 draft.]
