I guess if he wasn’t going to sign with Cleveland, his destination at least might grease the wheels for finishing off the discussed trade with Arizona of Cabrera for some young pitching, but still…

Damn – I was really hoping Toronto made this pickup.

Quality signing – signing a top half of the rotation starter (and awesome dude) at less than 8 a year on a short term deal? Even with health concerns, that’s a no-brainer, and frankly a bit of a coup. One would think somebody else might have been willing to throw in another year and a few million a year more in incentives. Guys like a healthy McCarthy, very shortly here (if not not), will not be had for less than 15 mil a year.

A fine pitcher with an engaging personality, but one that has been limited by injuries during his career. I am sure that Arizona will benefit from this signing.

I wouldn’t be too surprised by this move. It’s a substantial upgrade in salary for McCarthy, and he and his wife are familiar with AZ, as he played college ball there.

As for the Diamondbacks-if he’s healthy (you are obligated to begin any prediction concerning McCarthy with this phrase)- he’s a very good pitcher. His stability and demeanor will be an asset to the D’backs younger players. He’s also a ground ball pitcher so the Kubel defense won’t automatically be fatal to his success.

But the health concerns are very real. I don’t think you’ll see the D’backs dealing any pitching.
