schmedley, did you go to any games this past season? The crowds were pretty good for the 3 or 4 games I made it to this year. A winning team puts people in the seats just like it did 30 miles north in Baltimore. I went to a few games there late in the season and it was electric. The Nats stadium was packed for most of the 2nd half of the season and playoffs.

It’s more favorable to players than the previous system. Then, middle relievers like Juan Cruz, who were good middle relievers, but not worth much more than draft pick or two, would be offered arbitration and have their values severely depressed.

Nothing is a “given,” any Filly fan should know that after you won 102 games and then 81 then next season. But Rizzo is filling the holes, 5th starter, center field (so far) and he isn’t breaking the bank and there is plenty of time.

LaRoche doesn’t want to go to a losing team. That will let out the Pirates, and the M’s unless they make a super offer. So the only team really in play for him is the Rangers, and they have a lot of things to sort out before they get to him. Remember, he only got a 2-year offer last time around and he was 2 years younger. He had a good year, but not out of line with his career. Solid steady guy, and us fans will be very happy if he signs, but we have alternatives, Morse, Tyler Moore…

More than that, the point of the system was to ensure that the player being lost is truly valuable before attaching compensation to his loss. If a team doesn’t think the player is worth a considerable salary for even one year, then you get nothing for losing him.

Haren strikes me as the kind of guy who has learned how to pitch having lost a little of his stuff, like Frank Tanana and Frank Viola in the past. He’s also supposed to be a real good clubhouse guy and should fit in well with the Nationals!

The whole point of the system is that the offer is the same to everyone. It’s up to the team to decide whether or not each player is worth the qualifying offer.

5 Aces?? Haren is a has been……otherwise the Angels woulda offered him arbitration. He had back issues……that might be fine now but most definitely can and probably will come back. I ain’t denying Haren use to be a good pitcher cause he was definitely. He is by NO MEANS an “ACE”. I see two aces on that staff, Gio and Strasburg, who are both beasts. Not saying Jordan is bad, but he isn’t an ACE. The Nats shoulda just resigned Jackson or found a cheaper 5th starter who can eat innings and used the excess money to resign LaRoche to his three year deal he wants OR another bat somewhere. The Nats are a good team for sure, but it isn’t a given they are taking the division this year with Atlanta getting better and my Phillies healthy and getting a few key additions…..and hopefully a power bat real soon. It should be a great division race with the exception of the Fish and Muts.

I’m not upset Jackson is gone, either. Had high hopes, but he turned out to be the same mystery pitcher, and just SO frustrating to see that on-again off-again talent. In the end, he fit into the category of “there are no bad one-year deals.” You could argue Lannan might have done the same for millions less, but he might not have, and Lannan as insurance worked fine. Now we have the one year on Haran and if he’s good, he’ll be very good. Can’t wait to see our Five Aces.

Further, I don’t see how the player’s association bought into this system. How much does the draft pick depress the market value for someone like LaRoche? Is it the difference between the two years Rizzo offered him and the three years he wants but may only get from another team that will have to surrender its pick? It would be interesting to know what value in $$ teams put on the draft pick.

Jackson was fluky, had control issues, and it seemed he either did outstanding or was shelled. Im not upset he is gone. Not worth the money. Haren had one bad year affected by an injury. Every other year, pretty good. If healthy i dont doubt he will be much better than Jackson was for us.

There is something wrong with the “qualifying offer” system that makes the offer the same amount for a .500 pitcher like EJax (whom I like, but not enough) and a position player like Adam LaRoche (or Josh Hamilton, for that matter). I imagine that the current CBA will perish from existence before a single free agent accepts a qualifying offer, unless a GM or an agent makes a serious mistake evaluating the marketplace.
