Yes, and in 2005 he won a batting title. See I can take facts from the past and skew them in favor of my argument too. Bottom line is your getting a veteran right handed bat they desperately need. Is he gonna put up Pat Burrell power numbers? No, but the guy is a professional hitter who will not see the 8th and 9th innings when Phils have the lead. Stop belly aching about all the negative aspects of players and focus on the upside once in a while. What fun is it being a fan of a team when all you do is b*tch about them?

Big Polanco fan here. And I live in the DFW area now and saw q few Rangers games. Signing Young is a bad idea. But then again, there aren’t that many good options for the Phillies at third base. There’s Rolen, for the sentimental value, but he doesn’t seem to have fire in the belly, and he left Philadelphia on negative terms. Youkilis is probably too expensive. Would have loved David Wright but with the Mets having just done a deal with him that does not look like it can happen (even if they wanted to trade in the division).

Seems to me that the Phillies should just resign Polanco and live for another day. Maybe use Revere to get someone good and then play for Curtis Granderson for cf…

It’s for one season people. If his leg falls off mid season, so what? He’s playing for his career and his next FA contract this season. Not only is it a good move, but it’s a great move. Even if it was to satisfy some curiosity about his intangibles and see if they all kick in when he’s fighting for his career, it will be worth it. He will be a plus to the Phillies offensive game, and any plus to that is welcome IMO. 3rd has been a weakness offensively for this team for some time now, I welcome almost any change there.

I did watch Phillies third baseman last season. Fransden is the definition of a league average defensive third baseman. I don’t understand the notion that Michael Young can field. Where is this coming from?

Revere is 22, lets take a chance. Even if he doesn’t get better, he offers speed which this “old” team lacks. What is wrong here? Super cheap with some potential? Not everyone has to be Mike Trout or 32 and stuck in the minors. He is in the middle somewhere. Lets see. Surely better than 75 mill for upton or Bourne. As far as Michael Young, he is a one year fill in player. Why does everything have to be an extreme? We needed a third basemen, a right handed bat, a good defensive center fielder and speed. They filled the roles for 8.25 million. Job done. Not great options but something. And they still have money to pick up some pieces.

Of course, internal options are not the only options for Philly. There are far better players available that can be had without giving up prospects and whose salary will probably be in the range of what they’ll be paying Young.

Paperlions loves to quote stats, until the stats don’t support his position. Then, he reverts to the sentiment that he must be a bad third baseman, because the Rangers signed Beltre. Maybe he will be below average if you define average as replacement level. But there are a ton of guys playing third below replacement level fielders. He was never an average SS, I’ll give you that. He’s certainly not Beltre at third either, but he’s certainly NOT WORSE than Wigginton or Frandsen.

Man, you’re killing me. Young has never, ever been a good fielding player. Never in his career has he even been an average 2B, SS, 3B, or 1B. Ever.

Ask yourself, why did the Rangers keep moving him around and keep signing or trading for players to take his spot in the field? Because he has always been a below average fielder, that’s why.

Gotta love Philly Phans.

First, they are all over the Revere deal because “they need a glove in CF” and they are totally willing to ignore his complete lack of offensive value/potential.

Second, they are completely willing to ignore the fact that MY can not play defense. He’s horrible at 3B, horrible at 1B, and worse everywhere else….and, he can’t hit any more either.

Off-season optimism, it’s whats for dinner.

This world. By any stat measure or just eyeball test, Young is better than a good number of fielders judged average or above average. Hanley Ramirez, for example.

Here we go again, the Phillies are too old, they pay too much for players. Well, they just traded for a 24 yo CF and everyone on here said he’s not as good as Bourn. Well, duh. The Phils have a good young 3B (Asche) a year or two away. Oh, Young can’t play anymore? In 2011 (I realize that season ended 14 months ago), he hit .320 and was an MVP candidate (maybe not totally deserving, but still). He is 36, not 42. His defense will be league average, and now with Revere, no one will be stronger up the middle once Chooch is back. Come on, to imply this would be a bad deal for the Phils is just ridiculous, This is smart, if they pay 8 million or less.
