From Larry Stone of the Seattle Times comes word that the Mariners have finalized their one-year contract with outfielder Jason Bay and designated lefty reliever Mauricio Robles in a corresponding move to a clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Robles, 23, had a 5.78 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 71 2/3 innings this summer between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Oklahoma. He seems likely to pass through waivers and remain with the organization.
Bay’s contract will pay him $500,000 if he’s in the minor leagues and $1 million if he’s in the majors.
The 34-year-old batted just .165/.237/.299 with eight home runs and 20 RBI in 215 plate appearances this past season for the Mets. He has averaged an ugly .689 OPS since leaving Boston after the 2009 campaign.
