I actually think Galvis has some potential. I mean, his glove cannot be denied. Plus, he has shown consistent improvment as a hitter. He is hitting very well down in Venezuela as we speak. Your point is taken though. Third base has been a bit sketchy for the Phillies since Rolen left town. We've had the likes the aging David Bell, Pedro Feliz, Polanco over there. The difference is, those three were at a minimum capable of playing between competent and very good defense. We, and anybody who isn't delusional or biased, knows that Young just can't do that. He may or may not hit, but he certainly will be somewhere between disaster and bad in the field.

Actually, can you imagine the Phils and Yankees playing each other? Rollins, Howard, Utley, M. Young, Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Jeter, A. Rodriguez, Ichiro, Petite, M. Rivera, etc. etc.

Hell, throw in Hamilton, Youkalis, and Mauer - who have all actually been discussed - and you have probably the majority of the 2000 - 2010 all decade all star teams.

Assuming Young produces a .700 OPS this year in Philly, which will rank him at or near the bottom of the barrel again, he will still receive total yearly compensation in the amount of $17.2M. That's awesome for Michael Young, and not so much for the Rangers that will absorb most of that cost. That 5YR/$80M extension they signed back in '07 is not looking like such a wise investment here on the back end obviously. An even more costly example is A-Rod and whether his 5YR/$114M remaining will be a sunk cost for the Yankees. Judging by the free agent contract offers so far this winter, MLB teams on the whole appear more hesitant to throw out large dollars on 5-6 year+ commitments. Some of the smaller market teams simply don't have that kind of money to spend. Some of the larger market teams don't have that kind of money to spend because they are paying, in some cases dearly, for mistakes made in the past. What are Albert Pujols' stats going to look like in say, 6 years? Albert Pujols is a hitting machine among the best I've ever seen, but he is human and has gotten off to slow starts the past two seasons. When will those slow starts become slow seasons, while still costing the Angels an elite price? Not such a good time to be Josh Hamilton......with more teams needing to be cost conscious, there's less of a chance to strike the mother lode. Michael Bourn wants how much for how long? LOL Scott Boras.

Fransden will NOT be a late inning defense replacement. ....Galvis will be. He is a stud defense man who could fill in at 3rd, 2nd and his natural spot Shortstop. Galvis has way more range and a better arm than Fransden. The only thing stopping them from using him at 3rd is his hitting which is weak. Otherwise they would have saved a ton of money and just thru him at 3rd base instead.
