Rangers still want to trade for Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton

Most assumed that after losing free agent righty Zack Greinke to the Dodgers, the Rangers would shift their focus (and winter budget) back toward Josh Hamilton. But that might not be the case.

According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers “still want to trade for” Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton. Which would mean letting Hamilton walk and going after one of the other free agent starters or spinning another trade for a front-line guy like R.A. Dickey or James Shields.

Upton batted .280/.355/.430 with 17 home runs, 18 stolen bases, 24 doubles and 67 RBI across 628 plate appearances this past season for Arizona.

The 25-year-old is under contract through the 2015 campaign for a total of $38.5 million.

The Snakes are known to want a shortstop in return and the Rangers don’t want to surrender either Elvis Andrus or Jurickson Profar, which is why a multi-team trade has recently been explored.

Andrus and Wilmer Flores to Arizona, Dickey to Texas and Upton to the Mets!!

I’d rather get Olt and Martin and keep Flores for Dickey before making that deal.

If the Rangers were going to trade Andrus they wouldn’t need the Mets…

Sure….but who helps them more – Upton or Dickey? They can always resign Hamilton and forget about Upton.

Honestly, probably Upton. Dickey has had one great year, we shouldn’t pretend like this is the new normal for him. I love the way he pitches and his personality, but if I had to take a gamble on Upton or Dickey it is Upton every time.

For the Dodgers getting Greinke was good, but having Upton out of the division would be a plus as well.

As an Angel fan, Id rather they sign upton and trade away their best prospects. IMO the Rangers smartest move would be to allow their top prospects to develop another year and let them come up a year from now. These kids are going to be great, why would you trade them away for one player? It’ll be interesting to see how they play this.

Do the Rangers really want to do make a trade? Do the Diamondbacks? Or is this a Ken Rosenthal thing? It feels like Rosenthal’s a lot more interested in this trade than either of the teams are.
