NBC Sports, Yahoo! are partnering up

Dec 10, 2012, 8:20 AM EDT

NBC Sports

While you were thinking about the Royals-Rays trade, an announcement was made: NBC Sports and Yahoo! have formed a partnership:

Yahoo! and the NBC Sports Group today announced a content and promotional deal combining Yahoo! Sports’ original reporting expertise, coverage of big events, Rivals college content and popular fantasy sports products with NBC Sports Group’s growing digital assets and significant television promotion and integration. This alliance of two of the most trusted brands in sports will become the daily habit of fans looking for an all-star lineup of digital and on-air experiences.

OK, that’s the press release speak. What this means practically? Not a ton for you guys on a day to day basis. We’re still doing our thing. The Big League Stew guys and Yahoo!’s reporters like Jeff Passan are still doing theirs. We’re merely partnering up our complementary goods like NBC’s TV and video stuff, Yahoo!’s investigative reporting (Passan, Dan Wetzel and Adrian Wojnarowski), their heavily-trafficked portal and readership and their fantasy platform, which will feature Rotoworld’s unparalleled content.

source: The thing you may notice most immediately? Traffic is going to spike and we will likely have many new friends in the comments section. With whom WE WILL ALL PLAY NICE, RIGHT?! Don’t make me stop this car. Because I will do it.

Seriously, though, we are really excited about this. It instantly makes NBC/Yahoo! the biggest sports destination on the planet. And, more importantly, gives you guys everything you could possibly need as sports fans.

Now, back to your regularly-scheduled stuff.

Wait, this is an NBC site? Shoot.

  2. biasedhomer - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:31 AM

More traffic, more chances to troll.

  3. Gobias Industries - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:31 AM

We have to mingle with the Yahoo! commenters? Isn’t that like the Indiana University students being forced to mingle with the cutters? Oil and water I tells ya!

    • 18thstreet - Dec 10, 2012 at 11:06 AM

I, for one, plan to look down my nose at the yahoos from Yahoo as much as I’ve disdained the rest of you losers for years now. I don’t see how anything will change.

Now, I need to get my monocle shined.

      • Just a Fan - Dec 10, 2012 at 11:45 AM

Is this the Planters Peanut Guy speaking? Oh, I love your work sir. A little salty, but tasty!

    • stlouis1baseball - Dec 12, 2012 at 2:43 PM

      Cutters? You a Hoosier Gobias?

  4. uyf1950 - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:32 AM

Craig, I’ve seen the game threads on Yahoo Sports and the people posting there are the most obnoxious, foul posting people in the world. I sincerely hope that this site doesn’t become infested with those posters. And while the last part of my comment is my opinion the beginning is a fact.

    • uyf1950 - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:33 AM

      correction: “they” are the most…..

    • paperlions - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:11 AM

Have you every wandered into the comment sections on PFT or PHT? They are trolltastic and completely useless. HBT already seems to be an island of relative sanity in the abyss of internet comment sections. I think it’ll probably stay that way due to the established “culture”…such as it is.

      • uyf1950 - Dec 10, 2012 at 10:04 AM

I haven’t gone to any of the other sites here. I pretty much confine myself to HBT.

      • townballblog - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:28 PM

Can we put the HBT logo next to the folks who were here pre-yahoo-partnership? :-)

    • biasedhomer - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:32 AM

The difference is, on this site, the blogger seems to troll more than the readers.

  5. hooks024 - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:34 AM

profootballtalk was on this 3 hours ago. maybe Mr Florio is just more dedicated to his job.

    • Craig Calcaterra - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:36 AM

I was tweeting about it last night. But thanks for keeping score.

      • Gobias Industries - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Don’t sweat it, Craig. Those slackers over at the super popular OlympicTalk haven’t even mentioned it yet.

      • paperlions - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:12 AM

I have it on good authority that Rich Reilly reported this first on twitter.

    • stlouis1baseball - Dec 12, 2012 at 2:44 PM

Profootballtalk? Come on Man! You reference it like you are a fan or something. Geesh.

  6. indaburg - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:39 AM

As long as they play nice. Do they know the unwritten rules of HBT?

    • cur68 - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:03 PM

They better not be pie people. Enough of that ilk round here already.

      • indaburg - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:40 PM

        You read my mind, comrade.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:46 PM

        bread pudding!

      • cur68 - Dec 10, 2012 at 1:13 PM

But worse than even the pie lovers are the bread pudding people. What stygian dark spawned such as they?

      • historiophiliac - Dec 10, 2012 at 1:50 PM

Some of us are strictly adult desserts people.

        /sniff

      • cur68 - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM

There are many adults I’d like to make a dessert out of. Jessica Alba. Minka Kelly. Jessica Biel. If any (or all for that matter) jumped out of a cake this would be just fine by me. At no point would I want to see any of them in a bread pudding. Unless I was very, very, very drunk. Then I suspect even Rita McNeil would look ok.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:11 PM

You say that now, but if it were sitting in front of you…

  7. hooks024 - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:40 AM

I’m starting to like this guy. you Sir, have a new Twitter follower.

  8. illcomm - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:42 AM

cool. hopefully they replace u with a real writer. jk. not really.

  9. baseballisboring - Dec 10, 2012 at 8:57 AM

Ohhh boy I thnk the comments might get interesting…

  10. lewp - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Relax guys. Craig has the power to freeze comments.

    • baseballisboring - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:08 AM

      whats the fun in that?

    • Just a Fan - Dec 10, 2012 at 11:49 AM

Oh and he does……..often, very often!

  11. willclarkgameface - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:05 AM

Yahoo is so 12 years ago.

  12. gbar22 - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:13 AM

Anyone ever get the feeling that the writers sometimes pose as posters to argue with posters without directly involving themselves…

    • indaburg - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:44 AM

For awhile, I thought Craig’s alter ego was halladaybicepts.

      • indaburg - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:46 AM

        *halladaysbicepts

      • stlouis1baseball - Dec 12, 2012 at 2:46 PM

        Bwahahahaha! Spot on Inda.

  13. cardsfanandi - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:13 AM

We’ll play nice….unless they start it! Then we’ll finish it for all that is good and holy on the Hardball Talk boards!

    • historiophiliac - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:46 AM

      Yippeeee! A bench clearing!

  14. gbar22 - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:14 AM

…also hope this doesn’t become like yahoo answers

    • kopy - Dec 10, 2012 at 10:15 AM

      • pauleee - Dec 10, 2012 at 10:29 AM

Ok, fess up. What’s your Fark handle?

  15. Pierre Cruzatte - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:20 AM

Exciting challenge for Craig, I think. This is the opportunity for him to establish his “eminent reasonableness” brand to a broader readership. Godspeed.

  16. randygnyc - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:31 AM

The ignorance, filth and profanity that saturates the yahoo boards won’t work for me. HBT is officially on probation.

    • historiophiliac - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Ok, I’ll try to clean it up then.

      • Just a Fan - Dec 10, 2012 at 11:51 AM

        all of them?

      • historiophiliac - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:47 PM

        I meant me.

    • 18thstreet - Dec 10, 2012 at 1:49 PM

      We’ll miss you.

  17. albertmn - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:44 AM

I didn’t realize Yahoo! was still around.

  18. sdelmonte - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:45 AM

I don’t go to Yahoo Sports that often, but its investigative reporters are among the best in the biz right now. And they stole one of the few college football reporters I like, Pat Forde, from ESPN.

Which means little except that I am likely to follow some of the links that arrive here.

  19. larrybrown43 - Dec 10, 2012 at 10:16 AM

Great news. I love both Yahoo! and NBC Sports Talk.

  20. mungman69 - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Mingle? I can’t even mingle with myself.

  21. rcali - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:57 PM

Keeps Yahoo well funded but also makes it less fun just like what happened when NBC took this site over.
