“He couldn’t have been more clear”???? “He didn’t have his best year” is COMPLETELY ambiguous! It could mean he had is second best year, or his third best year…what it doesn’t say is that he was arguably the worst everyday player in baseball last year. So no, “he didn’t have his best year” doesn’t exactly cover the kind of season Michael Young had last year.

@paper – what reports are you seeing that the Phillies paid the $1.2 mil bonus? Everything is showing it as Texas

From what I’ve heard about him switching positions he was not the “ultimate team player.” Maybe playing 3B will keep him content and he’ll hit more like 2 years ago. Wishful thinking…

This is a lot of Amaro tip-toeing around the fact this team couldn’t score runs last year and he has done nothing to improve it. Of the 149 batters with 500 PA’s Michael Young was 130th and Revere was 132nd.

Yes, he did talk about the numbers. He also said this:

“He’s had some years where he hit .280 and others where he hit .330. But at the same time, even when his numbers aren’t extraordinary – and they were still pretty darn good last year, maybe better than anybody we had on our club – but the fact of the matter is he’s a professional hitter.”

That is bat-shit crazy. The only Phillie with 300+ PAs that had worse numbers than Young was Polanco.

@paperlions – the Phillies are paying Young $6 Mil, the extra $1.2 mil bonus you are thinking of is being paid by the Rangers. Rangers – $11.2 Million, Phillies – $6 Million.

This move will not be considered a mistake by the end of the season. That’s what I’m thinking/ hoping. This was a gamble, it’s not going to break the bank. Young is playing to prove he deserves another contract, he’ll be trying extra hard to produce. I do laugh at the cliche riddled description Amaro gave, too rich. I wish he were just a bit more scrappy though. Definitely low on the scrappiness scale for my taste.

Chavez would have been better (signed a 1 year deal for $3M).

Reynolds would have been better (signed a 1 yr deal for $6M).

Youkilis would have been better (considering a 1 yr deal).

Heck, sticking Galvis over there would have been better..similar offense, far better defense.

Are there any alternatives that were worse than paying Young $7.2M and giving up a couple of players?

Pshaw, power and OBP…batting average totally covers everything important a hitter could possible do at the plate….and a guy that plays a horrible 3B is exactly the same as plus defense in CF, no good defenders are ever put in CF because it just isn’t an important place on the field, guys hardly ever hit the ball out there.

Who really cares what he says, it’s what he does that matters. Amaro rarely tells the truth and smooths stuff over to keep us calm. He got us a contact hitter who will prob have the top avg on the team this yr or near top. We got 2 slap hitters on the cheap so far and lost some power by saying bye to the Hawaiin. Lets see what he does with the 22M remaining or whatever is left.
Crappy market this yr for free agents except for Hamilton as far as hitting is concerned.

ok, so we got Young and got old-er. Hey, he will hit for avg. and his worst yr is better than any of the avgs from last yr except Ruf who didnt play the full yr. Anyway, that is done. Let’s look at what we need to be done.. we need a bat..power bat. We have lost power from these moves. So is it Cody Ross(high K’s, low walks, defense idk), ALfonso Soriano (good pop, old, bad D), Nick Swisher (good OBA , good pop , defense idk), or Josh Hamilton (blows the others away, but has some baggage and would come to a nice organization with older vet players and he would feel comfortable here). Select one. Then we need a starter and veteran type bullpen help. We r just getting started here.

So you point is – GM’s always rattle off stat sheets when they bring in a new player? Well, then, I guess these quotes would suggest doubt if a GM said this:

“He has the talent, professionalism and makeup that embody what we look for in players” “He’s a number one, a blue chipper and I expect him to stabilize our pitching staff. He brings a great work ethic and tremendous character and he’ll have a big presence in our clubhouse”

That was RAJ talking about Roy Halladay after they traded for him. So based on your logic, Amaro had doubts on him, I guess

Wow. The attention paid to timeless cliches used by a GM who acquired a player he has to hope has a decent year is amazing. I’m a Phillies fan who thinks Amaro is an absolute dink as a GM but he didn’t say anything a billion GM’s haven’t said before. This is a GM who in 2012 said “I’m not a stats guy”. That is what should frighten the fans, not meaningless cliche babble.
