If anyone here still thinks the hang up with Napoli’s contract is a matter of just clearing space on the 40 man roster they need to wake up. There is obviously something else going on here. Whether it’s something the Red Sox didn’t like in his physical or one of the parties involved got “cold feet” about the deal. The point is it’s not about clearing a roster spot before the Red Sox can announce the signing.

Ari, all I’m saying is the Red Sox knew what their roster situation was when they scheduled the announcement. They also knew they were going to need a spot for him. Wouldn’t it make sense to clear a spot for him when they were going to make the announcement?
I’m certainly no expert on the Red Sox players or the ones on their 40 man roster. But I find it hard to believe that they couldn’t remove someone from that roster (even if it wasn’t Rosairo) in time to make the announcement official when it was reported they were going to have it. That’s all.

When you claim someone, you have to immediately add them to the 40-man (or lose them to another claiming team). You don’t have to add a FA until you officially sign them.

I’m not sure I buy the possible explanation of the issue with the 40 man roster. It looks like the Red Sox added Rosairo to their 40 man roster who they just claimed off waivers from the A’s on 12/10 yet they don’t have room on the roster for a guy they offered a contract to 3 or 4 days before that. It just seems like very odd timing if you ask me.

Any thorough screening takes time. Most places now have a pre employment urinalysis done too.

Ben Buchanan Occams that one. He’s not necessarily right, but it does seem much more likely there wasn’t an actual issue. This is usually not how “failed a physical” stories come out.
