Getty Images The Dodgers have designated Scott Van Slyke for assignment, according to the club’s official Twitter feed, to clear room on the major league roster for newly-acquired utilityman Skip Schumaker.
Van Slyke batted just .167/.196/.315 in 57 plate appearances this summer for Los Angeles, but he also hit .327/.404/.578 with 18 homers and 67 RBI in 411 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque.
The 25-year-old son of Andy Van Slyke seems like a worthwhile claim for a variety of major league teams.
He has appeared primarily in left field, right field and at first base over the past couple of seasons.

Andy Van Slyke’s KID was DFA’d? Now I feel older than dirt. Thanks a lot, Drew!

My first thought was “Andy Van Slyke has a brother?”

I think someone will pick him up. Still has some upside as a solid contributor

Van Pelt is not even close to the worst guy they have there.

The Mets wouldn’t like all of the attention he’d receive from reporters asking him about his dad. His head would get all big and he’d probably ask for a minimum contract, rather than accept an invite to camp. The Mets have enough drama going on with RA Dickey and his outrageous demands. They don’t need another headache like this.

The Red Sox got excited but only because they mistakenly thought it was Todd Van Poppel’s son.
Andy Van Slyke was way too successful for them to consider his progeny.

It is odd that they DFA’s van Slyke rather than Punto or Uribe….okay, this is Colletti, it isn’t odd at all, probably just poor judgement. I don’t think Van Slyke has huge upside or anything, but he could provide more value than 34 and 35 yr old utility guys that can’t hit a lick.

Giants sign him and he is starting left fielder by may and gets a game winning hit of Grienke to eliminate LA
