Hannahan is a 33 corner IF that can't hit and provides average defense, which is likely to get worse as he ages. He's pretty much the definition of a wasted roster spot. Most teams have a bunch of guys like this on their AAA team....of course, Hannahan has some element of veterany goodness that some managers like.

I find it odd as a Twins fan they were willing to give Correria 2/10 and yet they stated they wanted competition for Plouffe and only offered Hannahan a minor league deal, not that he is an everyday starter but could be used as a nice bench piece for a decent price.

The reasons for the Reds picking up multiple backup players can be found on last years roster: Miggy Cairo, Willie Harris, Wilson Valdez. The Reds had a bench that was, for much of the season, unusable. They brought up a guy from the minors, Costanzo, who went 1 for 21 before being sent packing; other minor league bats didn't make much impact when called up. So signings like this aren't much of a mystery to Reds fans this year.
