They just want him for one year too. They have Luebke and Wieland coming back from TJ surgery by 2014, plus Kelly and Erlin tuning up in AAA, plus Sampson, Oramas, and Portillo ready by 2015, plus Joe Ross and Donn Roach in ’15 or ’16, plus their 2012 class of Max Fried, Walker Weickel and Jake Eflin in ’16 or ’17. The Padres are loaded with prospect starters for the rest of the decade. After using 18 starters last year due to a rash of injuries, they’re just gun-shy and looking for insurance, not a multi-year commitment.

It’s weird seeing the Padres name for a free agent rumor, but at the same time with a new TV deal and new owners they should have more flexibility than in past years.

On a 1 year deal maybe. The Rangers have lots of young arms they should give those players a chance. They also have plenty of money to try again for big FA arms next year. I hope they don’t tie up multiple years with this guy. I think Maddox would wear himself going back and forth to the mound trying to keep this guys head straight. It’s much harder to pitch in Texas in the heat in the AL West compared to the Nationals ballpark against the NL East.

No, not a clubhouse cancer, as far as an outsider can tell. Always gabbing with the other starters, when he pitched a brilliant game and a reliever blew his win, he was first out of the dugout with a man-hug and a “you’ll get ‘em next time.” Genial with the press, etc. HOWEVER, kkolchak has it right. Frustration city. In the big games, he didn’t come through. Also, tended to give up runs in the first inning, so you start off the game down 4 or 5 runs. Then he would pitch six shutout innings and you go, grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

What’s the story with this guy? Clubhouse cancer? He can be inconsistent, yeah, but with the talent he flashes it seems like some team would have given him more than a 1 year test drive, and yet it never happens. Teams can’t get rid of him quickly enough. Insights?

7 teams in 10 years. This guy can’t seem to get any kind of long term deal from anyone. Makes me wonder if there is a reason for it.

He’s above average, he’s durable, he’s not old, and he’s a cut above an “innings eater”. You can’t build a staff around him, but he’s not at all a bad #3 or 4. IMO he’d be a good fit for the Rangers.
