Someone using Cody Ross and a whole bunch of money in the same sentence really shows how out of control baseball contracts are getting. In no world should a player of his caliber be making anything more then $3 million a year.
I understand being responsible, but this makes no sense to me.

So they were willing to overpay per year to keep it at 3 or 4 years, but the idea of adding a 5th at less annual cost is just ridiculous?

If giving an extra year is unacceptable, why focus on free agency as the avenue of improvement in the first place? When has a marquee player NOT signed a deal that overpaid in years recently? It is dumb in the long term, yes, but you knew that when you decided to play the game! The guys who get contracts with acceptable lengths usually do so because they have warts that prevented a bidding war.

Just seems like the combo of refusing to deal Felix for a quick overhaul AND refusing to take an occasional risk is a surefire way to keep this team stuck in neutral, wasting Felix's prime years in the process on teams perpetually winning 70-80 games.

Apples to apples, it's a no brainer to sign on a team that can compete. Why would Hamilton sign in Seattle when he could play with trout and pujols for the same money (assuming the mariners were even going 5 years)?
