Hanley Ramirez is in The Best Shape of His Life

Dec 17, 2012, 4:51 PM EDT

This comes straight from the team president, so it’s an extremely official BSOHL:

Thanks to the many people who brought that to my attention yesterday. I love that we’ve gotten to the point where you guys are worried that I might miss one of these.

  1. historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:02 PM

Yea! I’ve been waiting for this post since it was on Twitter this weekend.

    • anxovies - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Is this the first BSOHL of the off-season?

      • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Nah, we’ve had a couple already. I hope it picks up after the holidays!

  2. Old Gator - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:02 PM

Does this mean that he’s been taking Norman Vincent Peale seminars?

  3. moe0594 - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:04 PM

Here we go again with the ” So and So is in The Best Shape of His Life” crap…

  4. illcomm - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:05 PM

thanks for deleted my last comment Craig. u can’t own up to the fact your scum. I have a screenshot of the original comment you made.

    • mattyflex - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:09 PM

You should upload it to the interwebs and take him down, hardass. Maybe you could tweet it to your eleven twitter followers.

On the internet, you can be anything you want, and you choose this.

      • cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:58 PM

The funny thing is that his comment is still there. I replied to it and everything. So what he’s choosing to be is not only an ass but utterly wrong, too.

      • stlouis1baseball - Dec 18, 2012 at 2:34 PM

What the hell is this dude talking about Matty?

    • 18thstreet - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Did Craig’s original comment also use the wrong form of “your”?

      • koufaxmitzvah - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:29 PM

How can he when his form of you is u?

    • Craig Calcaterra - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:24 PM

What on Earth are you talking about? I haven’t deleted any of your comments. Why would I? You do a greater job of making an ass out of yourself than I ever could by censoring you.

      • anxovies - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:09 PM

That’s what happens when you comment during a alcohol blackout, Craig.

      • anxovies - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:11 PM

an alcohol blackout. I gotta get off this stuff.

    • hammyofdoom - Dec 17, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Would you say he’s just scum? Or that he is, in fact, rebel scum?

  5. cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Let the list be amended: Hanley’s in.

    • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:46 PM

For the record, if Miggy goes in, I am too!…wait, maybe that’s too much. How about: if Fielder goes in, so do I!

      • cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Miggy made the list last season. He had pictures and everything. I suggest, Miss, that if you wanna make the list we wanna see pictures.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 6:00 PM

No, I picked Fielder. Fielder! I can’t give up cheesecake right now. After the holidays. That’s the ticket.

      • cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 6:07 PM

Weaselling out, eh? When my boys pummel your boys it’ll be because your boys weren’t in shape. You should set an example.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 7:01 PM

I think it’s well established the Detroit power runs on moobs.

      • cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:04 PM

They gonna need manziers then. In don’t think they have enough power in their present incarnation to cope with my boys.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:15 PM

Hmmm, I think you’ve been smoking too much of your offerings in celebration. Pace yourself; it’s a long season, my friend. (Don’t worry. I don’t gloat.)

      • cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Oh, I do. I gloat a lot. And I’m not very subtle about it neither.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 9:19 PM

I see you will drive me to drink then. Alright, let the training begin. I want to be in the BSOML for this — or rather, my liver. 104 days…

      • indaburg - Dec 17, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Surely, you jest about not gloating? Shoot, that’s half the fun.

BSOML = Best Shape of My Liver?

      • historiophiliac - Dec 17, 2012 at 9:51 PM

Ahem, I am a lady. I “celebrate enthusiastically in your face.” A lady never gloats.

(my best Mae West impersonation) Aww, honey, my liver has great shape. Oooh.

  6. Jeremy T - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:15 PM

Who was it, kopy that kept track of the list last year? Can someone make sure he’s on top of it again?

  7. sibolleth - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Of course by that, Stan Kasten meant that Hanley Ramirez is in better shape than he ever has been, or, the best shape of his life.

  8. number42is1 - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:22 PM

Kopy.. Paging Kopy.. Kopy please pick up the white courtesy phones in terminal B.

    • cur68 - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:03 PM

Kopy’s on the job. Just emailed him; he’s had ‘puter issues. He’ll have the the full list to date next BSOHL post.

      • Gamera the Brave - Dec 18, 2012 at 1:22 PM

        Whew, good news, cur.
I had asked about that at the LAST (less official) BSOHL posting, and got no response…

Go, Kopy – go forth and compile!

  9. kkolchak - Dec 17, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Good to see Kasten hasn’t lost his knack for being a cliche-spewing machine. 😀

    • mazblast - Dec 17, 2012 at 6:03 PM

I agree. I’ve never known how he got such a great reputation, considering how few championship winners he’s been with during his travels.

  10. mazblast - Dec 17, 2012 at 6:01 PM

Just once I want to see a team exec, GM, manager, etc., say of a player, “He’s fat, slow, and in the worst shape of his career. Based on all those BSOHL guys who’ve stunk it up, I think this guy is going to be a monster this year.”

    • natslady - Dec 17, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Rizzo did say something like that once. He traded a pitcher because as he put it, “I got tired of watching him.” He took some bad PR for it, but he wasn’t wrong.

    • SOBEIT - Dec 17, 2012 at 7:05 PM

The Giants (Sabean/Bochy) have said that about the Panda…though not as harsh as you have stated…but definitely stated how “out of shape” he is and that it needs to be corrected.

    • whistler1217 - Dec 17, 2012 at 8:24 PM

Wrong sport but Bryant McKinnie for the Vikes is a pretty good example.

  11. escapingexile - Dec 17, 2012 at 6:23 PM

In that case, someone needs to ask Ned about Uribe.

  12. fincity305 - Dec 17, 2012 at 7:26 PM

  13. thegurubrave - Dec 17, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Juan Francisco, and it has been paying off

  14. temporarilyexiled - Dec 18, 2012 at 7:19 AM

Does this mean he’ll now be able to field his position?

  15. richardf954 - Dec 18, 2012 at 9:17 AM

Am I missing something here ? Did someone report seeing him at Burger King 30 lbs overweight ?
If not this is a none story. He’s making 15 mill a year . the least he can do is stay in shape in the offseason .
