Hiroyuki Nakajima says he signed with the A’s because Billy Beane is “extremely sexy and cool”

Dec 18, 2012, 6:25 PM EDT

Things got a little steamy today at the press conference introducing new A’s shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima:

We’ll save you from any Brad Pitt jokes because they’re all pretty much played out at this point.

Nakajima got a two-year, $6.5 million contract with a $5.5 million option for 2015. The 30-year-old shortstop batted .311/.382/.451 with 13 home runs and 74 RBI in 136 games this past season for Japan’s Seibu Lions.

Billy Martin said the exact same thing about George Steinbrenner when he first started managing the Yanks.

Bull Durham > Field of Dreams > Major League > A League of Their Own > The Natural > Every other movie about baseball but Moneyball and the one about the cat owning the team > The one about the cat owning the team > Moneyball.

I love the book but I agree the movie was pretty overrated.

I loved the scene with BB talking to Justice in the batting cage (“Where you goin’ with this, Billy?”). The rest was a snooze.

The book was way better (that’s just a general rule) but the movie did well as an adaptation. I had no idea how it would work in Billy’s back story as a top prospect but it worked.

Nakajima followed up by saying “It’s not a journey. Every journey ends, but we go on. The world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over. But wherever I go, there you are. My luck, my fate, my fortune.” (Brad Pitt’s Chanel No. 5 commercial)

    • lostsok - Dec 18, 2012 at 8:40 PM

      That commercial creeps me out.
