I agree. His OBP hasn’t been bad, but it is a BABIP driven OBP with low walk rates. The point wasn’t that his OBP has been bad. The point was that “pre-moneyball” everyone in baseball (all the way down to little league) already knew that not making outs was very very important.

Except, of coarse, that was never true. Everyone whose little league coach chanted “walk’s as good as a hit” on a regular basis to reinforce the need to swing at strikes, raise your hand. Yep, just about everyone. Even little league coaches knew the value of NOT making outs, no matter what the non-out was….MLB players knew it, too.

Young is the prototypical pre-moneyball player. Doesn’t get on base, plays horrible defense, but the old mindset was that batting average is the ideal measure of a player’s offense, number of errors the be-all-and-end-all on defense. I bet he hates the new statistics like the Arabs hate the Jews.

Both Team USA and Mexico should really be happy about this, this guy’s defense is a nightmare. Ah well, still love the guy and appreciate what he did here is Texas. Besides game 6 that is, he will never live that down…
