The Royals dreams died when their beloved owner died and at the same time Brett retired and we had the big baseball strike of 1994.

I know, right? The Jays signed Tim Raines! Tim Raines! God, how stupid are they? Did they not know he was retired?

At least Tejada has only been out of baseball since 2011 and will be 39 this year. Raines hasn’t played since 2002! And he’ll be 53 this season!

If the headline was:
“Tigers sign Miguel Tejada to minor league contract” it would be a headscratcher

If the headline was
“Braves sign Miguel Tejada to minor league contract” it would be a headscratcher

But
“Royals sign Miguel Tejada to minor league contract”…makes perfect sense, because *of course* that’s what the Royals would do.

I feel like this move encapsulates much of how strange 2012 was for baseball.

Edwin Jackson got $52 million, Angel Pagan got $40 million, Shane Victorino got $39 million, Cody Ross got $26 million. Ben Sheets made a great comeback, on a team that is loaded with pitching. Jamie Moyer was a starter for the Rockies at 49 years old and by season’s end was still (statistically) one of their better starters despite being cut less than halfway through the season. Kris Medlen went from afterthought and former prospect to one of baseball’s most dominating pitchers in 2012.

The Red Sox traded a bunch of albatross contracts in the biggest salary dump ever, then the Marlins went out and trumped that. The Dodgers went from flat broke to spending half a billion dollars in an offseason. The Mets finally had a pitcher toss a no-hitter. Phil Humber had a perfect game and an ERA north of 6.40 in the same season. A knuckleball pitcher won the NL Cy Young and then got traded to the AL.

The Orioles went from 69 to 93 wins. The Oakland A’s made an improbable run to the division crown. The Pirates completed the largest collapse in baseball history, finishing under .500 after being 16 games over .500, and had their 20th straight losing season clinched by being no-hit for the first time in 40+ years.

And to top it all off: somehow, some way, Johnny Damon, Miguel Batista, and Miguel Tejada continue to get new jobs as players.

In signing Endy Chavez, the Royals were just making sure that they had a solid contingency plan in place for the role of “worst player on the team” should Jeff Francoeur go down with an injury (since ineffectiveness is clearly not going to cost Frenchy his OF gig).

Just as with the Endy Chavez signing, the Royals are going for the kind of low-risk, low-reward free agents that they expressly need to AVOID. He is not going to put them over the top, he is not going to produce anything like he did in his long-ago prime, and he’s going to take up a roster spot and playing time that could benefit a younger player with real upside.

Somebody explain this to me. What precisely is Kansas City’s plan?
