Waiting for 2013 …

Dec 31, 2012, 2:28 PM EDT

I used to like to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, it’s just going to kick up sad memories for me.

Sorry. Slow news day. Torii Hunter hasn’t said anything for nearly two hours.

  1. cur68 - Dec 31, 2012 at 2:49 PM

Yup. That’s still a lousy call.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:56 PM

Indeed, it was an awful call, but it was completely acceptable since it was bad for the Braves and their fans, the idiots who do the disgusting “chop”, who then immediately showed their class, dignity and respect for baseball by trashing the place.

      • raysfan1 - Dec 31, 2012 at 9:19 PM

You mean like the Tigers fans who did the same thing after a similarly bad call during the 1934 World Series?

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Dec 31, 2012 at 10:04 PM

Wow, 1934? Couple of decades before my time.

      • raysfan1 - Dec 31, 2012 at 10:31 PM

You can google it, and watch newsreel footage on YouTube. Just pointing out that such boorish shenanigans are not new.

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:48 PM

raysfan, no one was suggesting the boorish behavior was without precedent, just disgraceful. Some of us remember Disco Night and other lamentable episodes. Ugly is ugly.

      • raysfan1 - Jan 1, 2013 at 1:56 PM

        True enough.

Different, not important, point…I’d call the Braves fans doing the tomahawk chop lame and unoriginal rather than disgusting. It was copied from Florida State sports fans. Florida State, of course, has full endorsement by the Seminole tribe of Florida for its use of Native American imagery.

      • anxovies - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:43 AM

The Seminoles did the hand chop during their sporting events?

  2. churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Dec 31, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Seems like a good thread to mention it, with it celebrating the new year and all. Please, I beg of you, any of our commentors out there. If you are going anywhere tonight and having a drink, don’t drive home. Call a cab, call a friend, call someone to get you home safe. People on twitter are saying the C[hicago]TA is doing $0.01 rides tonight, and I’m sure other cities are offering similar services.

    Be safe out there!

    • husky2score - Dec 31, 2012 at 2:56 PM

      Kudos to you. Amen.

    • koufaxmitzvah - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:38 PM

Free bus rides all over Austin.

    • indaburg - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:47 PM

Some local AAA affiliates, like Tampa Bay’s, are offerring free rides and car tows to members and non-members. Like copo said, stay safe. (Better yet, stay home. It’s amature night.)

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 1, 2013 at 3:57 AM

Free subway rides in Toronto for another three minutes. Socialism wins?

  3. husky2score - Dec 31, 2012 at 2:54 PM

Craig your gonna let this screw up your New Years? You know this has no relation to New Years after all right? I mean ya I know that call sucked but really? New Years is when you move on to next year, not look back at the most messed up moments of the past. C’mon man, it’ time to move on.

    • natslady - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:04 PM

Yes. I am trying to move on from Game 5. Ain’t easy.

      • husky2score - Dec 31, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Your own team screwed themselves up. In Craig’s case, the umps ruined his season.

      • natstowngreg - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:50 PM

        1. Give the Cards a little credit.

        2. One umpire’s mistake doesn’t lose the whole thing. That’s loser’s thinking.

      • husky2score - Dec 31, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Ok taking me a little too literal there.

  4. sdelmonte - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:07 PM

If you covered the sport with the weird oval ball, you would be very busy. I think the ghost of the Boss is having a field day.

  5. koufaxmitzvah - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:36 PM

Most of 2012 has been so-last 5000 year Mayan era. I’m just about over it.

  6. historiophiliac - Dec 31, 2012 at 3:47 PM

I also was going to put a plug in for Tipsy Tow or whatever they do in your area. Don’t want any of you to pull a Fisk and commit vehicular vegicide to close out the year. I think we’ve all woken up next to a strange bottle of vodka that we did not recall picking up, but please, people, call a cab. The husk you save might be your own.

  7. biasedhomer - Dec 31, 2012 at 4:39 PM

    Stay classy Braves fans.

  8. shoehole - Dec 31, 2012 at 8:04 PM

Natstown. Tell that to Armando Gallaraga.

  9. shoehole - Dec 31, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Raysfan, what’s your point? Did the Tigers fans make a bad call at first. Nats and I were talking about umpires. Apparently you are talking about some 75 year old baseball game. I am talking about a game about a bad call at first that the umps call ruined a perfect game that the world saw. Raysfan, you are showing your age.
    Signed, another Rays fan.

Drunk, gas pedal is floored, one hand on the wheel, the other is typing PBT comments… Very nice
