How I wish. Sadly, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Price’s agent, Bo McKinnis, had this to say a few weeks ago:

“He (Price) wants to have the best contract in baseball, however that may be defined. He expects to be the best in everything that he does. So hopefully we’re able to make that marriage between the Rays and that best contract. But we also recognize the economics of the game may not allow that.”

I don’t know McKinnis’s definition of the “best contract”, but I’m guessing it’s the one that offers the most money.

Agreed. I believe their TV contract will be redone by then, but the Rays won’t break the bank to keep him.

While it sucks that they can’t keep some of their elite guys like Price, it’s also true they miss out on a lot of the decline years of the players they don’t extend. Imagine if they had re-signed Carl Crawford, for instance.

This is what is so sad in baseball today. Teams like the Rays are nearly obligated to trade away elite talents they develop just when they are hitting their prime. They can afford to keep one, maybe two, of the guys they develop….everyone else will have to go when they get expensive.

We will have to see what happens. Price will be 30 when FA elegible. Assuming he continues be successful and healthy it would seem he would project to command @ 5 years/140 million. Unless the Rays are imminently moving to a real stadium I do not think they can swing that, or buy that out any time soon.

Price is a great pitcher and I was lucky to have him on my fantasy team last season. He has a great personality and is fun to watch.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what happens with Price. He’s gonna get pretty expensive in arbitration.
