What bothers me is Tom Seaver who was a great pitcher and who was and should have been a 1st ballot hall of fame electee has the highest percentage of votes ever. More than Hank Arron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, etc! The writers who vote for the HOF are so out of touch and use there "privilege" as voters to turn someone down that was mean to them or didn't give them a interview or whatever.

Being a Atlanta native Dale Murphy is a star to me. He did what only 12 other players (most of which are in the HOF) did which is win back to back MVP's. He hit more HR's than anyone in the 80's, second most RBI's, 5th in hits, oh and played on a down right horrible team 8 of those 10 years. And played whatever position he was asked to play. He didn't deserve the 1st ballot honor but needs to be in the HOF. If Ozzie Smith who was really only a gold glove SS and nothing else and he is in the HOF, why not Murphy? If Ryne Sandberg who has fewer HR's, RBI's, and Hits than Murphy why is Ryne in the HOF and not Dale?

It is a hall of "players that kissed up to the writers so that the writers could vote them in". Or a Hall of Popularity. The baseball HOF is almost as bad as the Rock and Roll HOF.

The steroid users is a whole other issue, I would not have voted Bonds, Clemens and the like on the 1st try but would let some in eventually. But if the writers didn't vote in Pete Rose then I don't see the steroid guys getting in either.

It is time to re-think what the Hall of Fame is and what the qualifications should be. Maybe it is time that the qualifications be what a player does on the field, during their career. Ty Cobb is rumored have killed a man. Babe Ruth wasn't a 'choir boy'. There are many more instances of players in the Hall with less than stellar characters. First, right past wrongs. Joe Jackson should be in the Hall. My opinion is that those who took steroids committed worse 'crimes' against the game than what Pete Rose did. Rose, the all time hits leader, should be in the Hall.

Biggio deserved election, but I understand some view him as not being a 'slam dunk'. He was kept out of being a first year election. I think the vote was a protest vote against the steroid boys. Will they get in? Maybe at some point. Leo Durocher was kept out because of character issues, until after he died. This is what may end up happening with Rose and the steroid boys.

What determines "wasting votes"? Who can decide if a vote is wasted? The voter could ALWAYS say they had nine or less "real" candidates and one pet vote attaboy.

As infuriating as this vote is, most efforts at reform run into serious problems once you discuss them.

I would like to have seen Alan Trammell, Tim Raines, Craig Biggio all make the HOF.
I also would have went with Edgar Martinez, even though primarily a DH, as he was just that good, though I can understand those who don't vote for him since he didn't play defense as well.
I think it is especially shameful that Trammell doesn't get more recognition. I'm not from Detroit or some closet Tigers fan, but I remember his game, and he was a terrific player both offensively and defensively.
He may not have had pizzazz or a publicity machine that touted his achievements, but he sure was worthy of the Hall.
I think Biggio will make it in the next couple of years, and I hope Raines does too.
Although the article's author, Craig Calceterra, is always touting for Bonds and Clemens, I honestly hope they don't ever get elected, regardless of what they achieved prior to their PEDs days.

You have to be really unlucky to test positive for steroids, and usually it's the drugs for post cycle therapy players test positive for. Those are in your system only ~4-6 weeks. One can imagine it's still 80%+ using today, and most will never get caught. They might as well permanently close the HOF, or get over it and let those who played at the highest level in as usual.

I have a big problem with nobody getting in on a ballot this loaded. Fine, don't vote for Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire, or Palmeiro if you really believe steroid use is blasphemy. However, then turning around and not voting in Biggio, Piazza, Trammell, L.Walker, Martinez, Schilling, Bagwell and Raines is flat wrong.

Also, nobody getting in means much less money for the museum side of the Hall to preserve the 160 year history of the game, its artifacts and archives, because there will be no big influx of visitors to celebrate the newest inductees. As someone who cares about historic preservation, that really sucks. The HoF lost over 2 million dollars last year, and it will now be worse this year.

It certainly won't help all the other businesses in the Cooperstown area that depend on tourism dollars either.

The overall feel i get is one of spite. Read some of the writers who try to justify a blank ballot. They either want to tar everyone with the same brush, guilt simply by playing in the decades they did, and seem to be leading a crusade so they can say they had nothing to do with peds. We are not blind however. Peds would not have gained the traction that they did without the writers willfully ignoring them and day after day singing the praise of those that they are now crucifying. I am not saying that all writers are guilty but come on, the very ones now voting had access at least some of the time to the players. They heard them joke about it at the very least and that would have caused any rational person to think hey maybe there is something happening here. So what does one do? I would have looked into it. Maybe i would have found nothing to publish but then again i am not a reporter with their contacts. What i would have done is turn a blind eye to it and then later try to distance myself from it. This is kinda of like stepping in a pile of steaming dog mess before a party. Just because you can point out someone that got more on them it does not mean you are free from the stink which everyone else notices.

My opinion, as truly expressed would be unprintable. Baseball has a big, big problem and this is just another sad exhibit in the case. My nutty proposal would be untennable at best, but here it is. I would look to form a committee of veteran players, not neccessarily former players, managers, and yes CURRENT writers to form a revised HOF. Give them a set of metrics, and a list of items that would earn the player a theoretical "asterisk".They would be tasked with statistical review, AND a review of PROVEN ( as in medical evidence, police records, verified media reports and verifiable eye witness statements) character issues to determine a less subjectve HOF. To make it a more total view of baseball accomplishment include Negro League greats and international greats (Sadaharu Oh etc). The catch is the monument will be engraved with the WHOLE story. IE "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is IN, BUT it tells of the disgrace that was the "Black Sox" scandal. Likewise Pete Rose is IN, but his marker explains his betting on the game and the consequences. Get the idea? Also, just for fun put this Hall near Elysian Field in Hoboken, NJ...where there is a strong link to the real start of organized competitive play.

IE “Shoeless” Joe Jackson is IN, BUT it tells of the disgrace that was the “Black Sox” scandal. Likewise Pete Rose is IN, but his marker explains his betting on the game and the consequences. Get the idea? Also, just for fun put this Hall near Elysian Field in Hoboken, NJ…where there is a strong link to the real start of organized competitive play.

Two thirds of these has-been writers believe Jack Morris was a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher.

Two thirds of them also think Bonds and Clemens are not Hall-worthy.

At least 6 voters thought Clemens should be in the Hall, but not Bonds.

More than a third believe that Bagwell, Biggio, Piazza, Raines and Schilling are not worthy.

This is basically the same electorate that gave Jim Rice over 3/4 of the vote a few years ago.

Anybody think the Hall and BBWAA have even a tattered shard of credibility left?

If I had been voting way back when, I would've voted for Joltin' Joe on his first ballot of eligibility. . . . And ditto for at least some of the guys listed (by church...) below (e.g. Hornsby, Berra, etc.).

I know the First Ballot thing is not part of any sort of guidance, but let's face it, we all know who got the most votes during their first year of eligibility (Tom Seaver at like 98.8%) and track that sort of thing (I don't know how guys like Mays & Aaron weren't unanimous, BTW). I know there's no separate room or anything like that in the Hall (I was there this past summer) for First Balloters, and yet. . . they can be tracked and ostensibly represent the "best of the best." So keep out the "known" PED users (and I understand that even that direction has its problems) from getting that "First Ballot" designation and then vote them in next year. Call it the "Character Clause Compromise" - a relatively minor roadbump on the way to the HOF following a(n otherwise) HOF-worthy career. . . .
