He (Tram) deserves to be there before Larkin, that’s for sure. The Tigers need to retire the numbers of these guys, and build a statue of Tram and Lou turning two at Comerica. They dropped the ball on not honoring Sparky before he passed, so I don’t know why they’re waiting on some of these guys. Maybe next year they can have a 1984 anniversary and retire some numbers.

I agree with you. This has been going on for as long as Hall of Fame voting. If Aaron Sele gave a writer good quotes, was nice to him when he was first starting out, was nice to his his kids, picked up bar tabs, whatever, why not toss him a vote? Now, if the writer had nine votes on his ballot and the choice for the tenth came down to Aaron Sele or a real valid Hall of Fame candidate, well, that’s unacceptable. I’ll bet that the supporters of Aaron Sele and Shawn Green did not submit full ballots.

nobody should be on the fence about biggio….he has no business being in the hall of fame…look at his stats…you’re going to put him in the hall of fame for what, being in the league for 20 years? that doesn’t qualify you for hof

While I agree that Lofton should have had a LOT more support, I totally disagree that he was “the best leadoff guy” of his generation. He played the bulk of his career in the same timeframe as Rickey Henderson AND Tim Raines.
At least we’re not talking about how the only two players elected were Jose Mesa and Rondell White!

The one consolation today is that intelligent baseball fans here and elsewhere are remarkably united in seeing these results as a travesty.

Unfortunately, intelligent baseball fans appear to be a small minority within the BBWAA.

What should be done to every HOF voter is have them get 100 at bats against a major league pitcher, they must hit the ball at least 20 times. Then they have to run the bases in less than a minute. If they can’t do both then they are no longer allowed to vote. Doubt many could even do that and that would be considered awful for an MLB player. Paraphrasing Jack Nicholson, how does a fat fuck like Buddha have the balls to preach self discipline. How do flabby, weak non athletic sports writers and bloggers have the balls to judge world class athletes.

You can find better examples. A year after the Veterans Committee elected Yankees manager Joe McCarthy, the BBWAA gave him a few votes in 1958. My opinion is that they were voting for Sen. Joe McCarthy because they were afraid of being hauled before the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations. Of course, Sen. McCarthy was dead by the time they cast their ballots. Either way, it’s a reason to believe that the BBWAA membership is not a subset of people with functioning brains.

how in the hell Lofton only got 3% is absurd.the best leadoff guy on his generation.How Biggio got more then Piazza is asinine.Piazza, for me is a first ballot HoF hands down.Im still on the fence about Biggio,Morris is NOT a HoFer but neither is jim rice and he got it….No matter what your opinion is I think we are all in agreement that the voting system is trash and needs to be changed ASAP

Unpopular opinion: I actually have no problem with someone voting for Sele as a “hey, you had a solid career; now you can say you received a Hall vote” kind of thing, assuming that person applied rigor to the rest of his/her ballot and didn’t vote for Sele instead of someone they’d consider borderline. I mean, surely there’s no way someone *actually thinks* he’s a Hall of Famer.

Alright, I gotta ask the Todd Walker question.
BBWAA’s main page shows Walker received 0 votes for 0%, as should be.
On their list of ballots, however, Mike Dyer has Todd Walker listed (along with actually a really strong ballot of Bagwell, Bonds, Clemens, Martinez, Palmeiro, Piazza, Raines, Sosa, which, I don’t get the McGwire exclusion but okay). Was it supposed to be Larry? Was the ballot not counted? What is going on here?

My guess is most of Sandy Alomar’s votes came from old-timers who thought they were voting for Roberto.

Ridiculous that Trammell got 20 fewer votes than last year. Wonder where his vote total would be if he hadn’t been ripped off in the 1987 AL MVP vote.
