let me say that having read Clemens comments it is clear that the writer of this article is by far more dishonest than Roger. At no time in his statement did Clemens say or even intimate such a view. Yet some of you mindless bloggers are here calling the man a liar for something which he did not say! Please read before you comment. It might help in giving some intelligence to your comments.

The definition of cheating is doing something which is against the rules of baseball i.e spitting and/ or scuffing the baseball. As i understand the allegations many of the persons who were allegedly involved did so at a time when it was not illegal to do so.

I don’t care who was on the Mitchell Report, or who had andro in their locker, or any of that crap.

We tend to contextualize the entire PED debate as grown men cheating at a children’s game. These dudes were out there trying to feed their families. The BBWAA doesn’t have to worry about their bodies breaking down, about being unable to support their children because they can’t physically write anymore. The entire debate is so warped.

@paper – I am not at all saying steriods were fine in the past. I am saying that these guys today (rightly or wrongly) are under a closer microscope, and the voters today have no choice but to factor in PED’s when casting a vote. There are those that say let it go. There are those who say keep them out. But either way, there is no disputing that 25 years ago, writers could easily stay in denial on PED’s, greenie, etc.. Again, I am not sayign that is right, I am just saying things have changed, and voters now have to make a choice on the weight they give PED’s, whereas they did not have to make that choice in the past.

The BBWAA is a joke, and so is the HoF, until they put Bonds in.

Why is suspicion relevant?

Steroid use was considered a problem in baseball in 1969. Not new, but a problem that had been around long enough and was prevalent enough that investigative reports and cover stories were done on it.

What you are saying is that steroids were fine, until they weren’t and now that we’ve decided that they aren’t….we’ll apply the new morality to actions that occurred a long time ago….or even suspicion of actions, evidence be damned.

And I get Bonds/Clemens case, but we as a society ignore events before Canseco. There was a book called “North Dallas Forty” that talked in detail about steroids being used in the NFL, in the 70′s. So should we assume that steroids wasn’t used in baseball then?

How far did they use it? Not sure, but they did use speed in the 60′s to get them through 162 games, that was according to Jim Boutman who wrote “Umpire Strikes Back” in 1981, and another book about his season. The point being players used any advantage they could get to, in the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s, 90′s, and even now. NFL does it too, so why just punish MLB players?

There is no proof Clemens threw a bat at Mike Piazza in the World Series. Show me the test for that he failed? You do know that the announcers who said they saw it happen are known liars, right? And don’t even get me started on the cameramen from that game, they have no credibility.
