I think people (fans, most somewhat reasonable writers) thought that Bonds & Clemens probably warranted a spot, but I don't think a whole lot thought they'd actually get in.

It's been pretty clear that the people who had the best access to the players when all of this stuff was going on, and never wrote a peep about it, were going to take a ridiculous "holier than thou" attitude.

Frankly, anyone who was covering the sport in that era and didn't say anything should get the same damn stigma attached to them.

They are, after all, the "caretakers of the game" and they failed MISERABLY.

grumpy, were there rumors about Peititte before his involvement was exposed? We heard that he was a Christian and family man and all around good guy.
i have only one question! having regard to the position taken by the Hall voters this year which many of you seem to support. Who in your opinion can we expect to be voted into the Hall after this that we can feel satisfied was not taking any kind of PED? I would really like to see this list because otherwise the Hall has of today been closed to future inductees. I challenge any of you to provide me with that list.

Wow. Nail on the head. My Dad took me to my first game in 1968, at the old, OLD Yankee Stadium. I loved the game with a passion until '94 and the strike. That strike (coupled with Jack Mc Dowell flipping the bird to the fans right in the middle of the greedy owner / greedy player shouting matches, a sight I'll never forget) killed it for me.

That is, until '98 with McGwire, Sosa and that fantastic Yankee team. I was back.

A year or two later, while steroids were starting to make news, MLB admitted they deliberately juiced the ball in '98 to heighten fan interest. The sportswriters (and fans) responded with a collective "so what". My response - why bother any more?

Marketing the sport won out over the sport, so today it's all entertainment for me, no more, no less.

Still don't see how Clemens, bonds and piazza weren't elected... But it is refreshing that the voters didn't put other players that weren't as accomplished or deserving over these three.

I do think that other cheaters should be removed from the hall if they aren't going to allow these guys in.

On a plus side to this all, since bonds isn't going to make it in and hank Aaron is going to be removed by the kids yelling cheater cheater, The Great Bambino can regains his rightful place in history as The Homerun Champ again.

Amphetamines aren't steroids. If amphetamines were as powerful as steroids, players would use them instead of steroids. Athletes switched to steroids and HGH -- despite the legal risks, the health risks and the risks of banishment -- because steroids let you turn on a pitch and hit the ball farther and more consistently than any other product that's out there, including amphetamines (which could be argued actually hurt performance!).

Steroids changed the game, and their use by a select group of pro athletes puts athletes who don't use them at a huge competitive disadvantage. They don't belong anywhere near the game, the guys who use them don't belong in the Hall of Fame.

I think the writers were off the mark here. Bonds and Clemens were two of the best players of all time at their positions. For the writers to forget the fact that they were sure-fire Hall of Famers before the allegations was rather short-sighted. Remember, neither Bonds nor Clemens failed a drug test.

Amphetamines are illegal in the U.S. — and have been for decades. If using them wasn’t cheating, why would guys go to such lengths to hide the fact that they’re taking them?

So you are for kicking Aaron, Mays, and Mantle out of the HoF as well then, right?
