This guy molded Montero into a top 3 NL catcher. He serves as a adequate backup for a game or two here and there, but more importantly acts like a player-coach. I was hoping that he would end up in the DBacks system as a coach, but good for you Toronto. You got a quality, dependable guy.

I really like this signing. Thole and Blanco battle it out for the backup job, if Thole loses out, there are always a team or two that need a backup catcher come spring training and you might get a decent prospect. If Blanco loses out you have a solid veteran at triple A and a Latin catcher introduced to an organization investing big in Latin talent (a very Dominican flare in Toronto that I love). Blanco is the type of guy that makes a great coach/manager down the road. Ups to AA.

I’ve always liked Blanco and sort of hoped the Yankees would sign him. He was usually good for a few dingers and some pretty nifty defense, though at 41wonder how much is left.

When Greg Zaun interviewed Dickey last year for Sportsnet (well before the trade), Dickey told him that Blanco caught his knuckle ball better than any other catcher. Blanco will probably share the catching duties in Buffalo, and would be called up if Thole was hurt. Alternatively, he and Thole will be fighting it out for the back up job behind Arencibia.
