Is it better to have mediocre players on short term contracts? That was certainly McCourts’ thinking. Moreover, it’s not like Gordon is any good. He was brought up too soon and it showed. He is a terrible defensive shortstop. While he started at short last year, he led the league in errors at the position. Even Ramirez (who is not a great defensive shortstop) is an upgrade over Gordon. And Gordong at the plate is even worse. He lacks plate discipline and can’t bunt. His only value is his speed, which doesn’t help if cannot get on base. More time in the minors might help him both offensively and defensively. If he were to learn how to play outfield and he develops more at the plate, he could have great value to the Dodgers as a platoon player who could play as many as six positions (which is hopeful).

Three of those guys traded because the Dodgers have a stupid GM. The Dodgers would need to find someone dumber — those exist — who can ALSO afford those players. Such a creature does not exist.

Perhaps these deals will be bad down the road, but flexibility is not as important as having much better players locked into spots. With the exception of maybe the Angels, any MLB team would be thrilled to trade flexibility in CF for Matt Kemp.

None of them are tradeable??? 3 of those guys were just traded within the past year and Ethier has been mentioned in all kinds of trade rumors. Plus the Dodgers can eat money on any contract. Just saying.

And thus we see one of the dangers of long-term deals: they really harm your flexibility. Let’s say that it made sense to move Gordon to center. So you need to move Kemp (it would be crazy to trade him). But there’s long-term deals in left and right, too. And if (as it would for some teams) make sense to try the left fielder at first, there’s a long-term contract there, too.

The Dodgers have painted themselves into a corner. Make a reasonable assumption that out the group of high-priced players — Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, and Adrian Gonzalez — one of them disappoints. None of them are trade-able.

Not as a starter, but he would have some value if he could adequately back up both infield and outfield positions, giving the Dodgers the extra roster flexibility to, say, carry a platoon at another position.

He put up some good numbers in the minors, and if he ever learns to bunt properly and draw a walk, with his speed, he could disprove the old adage that you can’t steal first. Clearly nowhere near ready for the majors though.
