Its amazing that some of you fools actually think biggio was an elite player and he was.better than alomar. He couldn’t hold his jock. Some posts had biggio being better than jeter. That is so moronic. This logic makes me understand why obama is our president. Some people are Morons. When you state that in a twenty year career that biggio only had one 200 hit season. His career batting average was only. 281. You call him elite. You are the same people who think obama is a great president because he got re elected. I reject WAR as a stat given that (i) there’s no one set way to calculate it, and (ii) it doesn’t measure lots of intangible elements to the game (for example, having Barry Bonds in the line-up in 2001 made every player on the Giants better). But even if you like WAR as a stat, how do you compare Biggio’s WAR when Biggio played in the NL with less competition at the position, and Alomar’s WAR, where there were better second basemen in the AL than in the NL?

In any case, looking at the stats, we’ve got Robbie Alomar with 19 points on OPS, and he probably played better defense. Given a choice, I take Alomar over Biggio every day of the week. But either of them could start for my team any day. And both should have been first ballot hall-of-famers.

Now you force me to not only pile on but to point out that Robbie Alomar and Craig Biggio are nearly IDENTICAL through the 90′s, with the edge (and it PAINS me to say this) going, in my opinion, to Biggio (but if I had to make the argument that Robbie was better, I sure could do that, too). Ok this could be my favorite post. Did you and the other 40 people who liked your post even look at their stats? Meter had 8 out of 17 seasons were he had 200 hits. Biggio had ONE in twenty seasons. Jeters career batting average is. 311 while biggio’s was. 281. Jeter played shortstop a much more demanding position than second. I will not even bring up his clutch postseason hits and Fielding. Sometimes their is a New York bias I live there so I know about it. But in this case their is no way that is the case with biggio and jeter

To compare him to ty Cobb is.moronic. Cobb was one of the best players in the history of baseball. You could never say that about biggio. He certainly wasn’t one of the best.players in either league. The case for Biggio is thus: The two people with bWAR around Biggio’s have names like McCovey & Banks. Biggio’s is the 36th best bWAR on the list of HoF memebers. He ranks in the top half of Hall of Fame second basemen in most categories. He was an All Star at catcher and 2nd base.

He was a treat to watch play, not least because he was a genius at getting hit by pitches. In fact when Biggio was in his prime, he was a stud; one of the best patience/power/speed guys playing at the time. Given that he finished his career 9 HR shy of 300, if he WANTED to hang around till he made 300, THEN you might call him a stats compiler because its the one set of numbers that keeps him from equalling Willie May’s 300HR, 3000hits & 300SB record; May’s is the only guy to have that one. It also keeps him out of the nearly as rare 300HR 3000SB club. He’d have been the 7th guy ever to do that. Some stats compiler.
