Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Wednesday evening that Brian Wilson has begun to turn the corner in his recovery from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. So it stands to reason that the free agent reliever is now starting to talk with teams that want to sign him.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Mets are “showing strong interest” in Wilson and sent general manager Sandy Alderson to a private workout with the right-hander on Saturday. They’re presumably viewing him as a low-risk, high-reward type of guy who could be flipped for youth at this year’s trade deadline if he enjoys a decent first half.

The Mets’ current closer, Frank Francisco, posted an ugly 5.53 ERA and 1.61 WHIP across 42 1/3 innings last summer for New York. He’s entering the final chapter of a two-year, $12 million contract.

Wilson, who should ne near full strength on Opening Day, owns a 3.21 career ERA.

He would be a huge upgrade from Francisco but I’m not a fan of players who bring unwanted media attention.

Unwanted media attention? He’s just a quirkier (and more talented) version of Turk Wendell.

I’d love for this deal to happen. He’s lightyears better than Frank Francisco, and the opportunity to flip him for a prospect around the trade deadline doesn’t hurt either.

Quirky? No. Wilson is a phony, completely fabricated persona. He created a marketable character to play in order to get media attention. He wasn’t this guy throughout his entire career. I don’t care if someone loves him or loathes him, but don’t pretend this cartoon he’s turned himself into is his true self or that he’s not looking for media attention.

Can’t decide if bringing the Beard to NYC would be a good thing or disaster.

I don’t understand why Wilson would be interested in signing a “low-risk” contract that doesn’t offer him substantially more guaranteed money than the Giants offered and would still offer him.

Signing Brian Wilson as the full time closer would be a great idea if it happens for the Mets. As a Mets fan, if we are basement bargain shopping then why not sign P Jose Valverde, Matt Capps and Francisco Rodriguez to veteran minimum deals and rotate them between the bullpen and closing roles. The bullpen was the weakest part of the pitching staff last season and these moves will improve the pitching staff without breaking the bank.
Also, OF Delmon Young could be signed to help the outfield on a veteran minimum deal.
We are less than 2 months away from spring training so the closer we get to opening spring training, it will be easier to sign these guys to minimum or minor league deals.
C’mon Sandy, there are a couple of veterans you can sign for 1 year to improve the Mets.

Delmon Young would make Lucas Duda look like Endy Chavez out there.

He’d also make John Rocker look like Michael Moore.

I’ve been waiting for this. I’d love for the Mets to sign him, but they won’t because someone will put together a Joe Nathan/Joakim Soria deal to bring him in and the Mets can’t/won’t go there.

Did I just read a I don’t know why they don’t sign a Delmon Young….ummm where do we start maybe because he’s an anti semite ass clown and just guessing that wouldn’t go over real well with the owners and 28 fans they have left and his 220 avg ,poor fielding and injury history doesn’t help either
