Reds sign Cesar Izturis to minor league deal

Cesar Izturis will be in camp with the Reds after agreeing to a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to spring training.

Izturis, who spent last season as a utility man for the Brewers and Nationals, is one of 15 non-roster invitees to spring training for the Reds. He remains a good defensive infielder at age 33, but was always a bad hitter and hasn’t topped a .600 OPS since 2009.

Considering how much manager Dusty Baker loves veterans and doesn’t seem to mind utility types who can’t hit, I’d be surprised if Izturis doesn’t make the Opening Day roster.

That last paragraph is about the only bad thing about being a Reds fan at the moment. I hate Dusty so much.

Only on the minor league roster for insurance. Won’t make the opening day roster.

    Wilson Valdez part 2

Corey Patterson, Wilson Valdez, Fred Lewis….who else am I forgetting? Dusty will give this guy far too much time on the field this year. He’ll be batting .150 and no one but Dusty will understand why he’s still on the team.

I think the guy makes far more correct decisions than wrong ones, but sometimes I swear Dusty must have a daughter who really likes dating has-been players and saying “daddy, please let him play on your team”
