Scott Rolen could be a target for the Dodgers

The Dodgers have poured money into various parts of their roster over the past several months, but they’re set to open the 2013 season with Luis Cruz as their starting third baseman and do not have much depth behind him. So more moves are being considered.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Los Angeles front office is viewing free agent veteran Scott Rolen as one “possible target” to help out at third base.

Rolen turns 38 years old in early April and is said to be considering hanging up his cleats for good, but a decent contract offer from the Dodgers or some other club may lure him away from that thinking. The Reds have some interest in bringing him back.

Rolen has batted just .244/.301/.397 with 13 home runs and 75 RBI over the last two seasons.

He’d be in keeping with the Dodgers’ new policy of overpaying over-the-hill players.

I’ve been a huge fan of Scott Rolen since he was a rookie. That said–Scott, it’s time. You’re running on empty.

Are those numbers at the end accurate? I don’t remember Scotty’s 2011 being quite so terrible. One of the guys I coach little league with played against him in high school. Remembers the sound of Rolen’s liners whizzing over his head, slamming into the wall around 6-8 feet high, and sounding like they would go right through it.

I hear you Redleg. I watched the dude play in high school. He grew up about 2 hours south of me. He hit moonshots. One of which cleared a fence about 20′ high and landed in someone’s pool in the nearest housing addition.
He is friends with a local baseball instructor in my hometown and works out in the baseball building during the offseason. You should see him take BP up close. Be it from a machine, soft toss or a tee…he has serious bat speed. Always has.

      Where are from?

Token will be a great bench player if used 2-3 times a week.

Not that I’m a Dodgers fan, but I can’t imagine that Luis Cruz will be drastically outperformed by a hobbled, aged Scott Rolen in 2013.

I think it would be safe to eliminate “drastically” from your statement.

Like your age old policy of posting moronic garbage.

Good lord, that came out of nowhere. Did he bang your wife or something?

It’ll be a sad day when/if the Dodgers sign him…there has to be better options out there.
