Yes there are the Gopher Balls, but he was able to take the ball 32 times last year, and with other older pitchers that are at least as “mediocre” as he is getting almost double I would say it’s a deal. I am guessing he gets a 5/45 or a 4/40 offer which he will likely reject and end up getting someone to give him 3/39.

It’s called the power of the MLBPA. James Loney had a similar structure to his payments as a Dodger last year. The philosophy is basically that if a team is going to use a young player to shore up a position for a certain number of years, that player will at least have enough money to not have to worry about finding some other job right away should the relationship not work itself out.

According to Frangraphs, Hughes should be worth the 7.5 mil., and may be a bargain if he can improve just a bit over last year. This one won’t hurt NY. While he isn’t a steal at the price he isn’t going to be grossly overpaid either, and it’s a one year deal.

A little more then I would have thought he would have gotten via arbitration but when you consider Ryan Dempster just signed a 2 year deal for $13,25MM per the Yankees deal with Hughes seems more then reasonable.

Talk about over paying….they want to get there cap down yet you shed out 7 mil for a mediocre pitcher? I just don’t understand that
