Jaime Garcia opts against playing in World Baseball Classic

Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia previously said that he planned to pitch for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, but the provisional rosters were released today and he’s nowhere to be found.

And the Cardinals are probably very happy about that–and maybe even had something to do with it–considering Garcia struggled with shoulder problems last season and has a long injury history.

Last month general manager John Mozeliak said he was happy to hear that Garcia felt strong enough physically to potentially pitch in the WBC. However, it’s pretty easy to see that Garcia is exactly the type of pitcher who shouldn’t be interested in tacking on any more innings than necessary.

Damn, that just pushed back the time before one of the youngsters replaces Garcia in the Cards rotation this season.

At this point, do you really think he’ll make it through spring training?

I don’t expect him to make it Jupiter without another trip to another ortho (or shrink) for that matter.

How about giving teams a supplemental draft pick if players get hurt in the WBC and miss more than a designated number of games? Might be a terrible idea I’m just trying to think outside the box so teams aren’t so repulsed by the idea of their players in the tournament.
