"To sign a good but not great catcher to a long-term extension that goes into his 30s would be a risk for the Orioles, although obviously it all depends on Wieters’ asking price."

I think that's pretty disingenuous to call him a "good but not great catcher". Over the past 2 years he's 4th in the majors in WAR (9.1). Even if you think the fielding bonus is too generous (21 runs), then knock off 2 wins and he's a 7.1 WAR C over the past 2 years. He would then be the 7th best C in the game over that time.

There's a good argument that he's a top 5 C in the game, and that is a hell of a lot better than the "good but not great" label you provided.

While I'd like him to be more of a threat at the plate, a real fear-inducing guy that clubs end up walking because they are that intimidated....

just look at the difference in the Orioles pitching when this guy is behind the plate versus... well, anyone else they put back there.

This is exactly why I hated hearing people say he's too big, and they should move him to first base.

The guy understands batters, and knows how to call a game for his pitchers.

Oh, and it's just plain funny to watch people try and steal bases on him.

"To sign a good but not great..."

Seriously?! Wiet (wheat) is the best defensive catcher in baseball right now. He's spent his career to date working strictly with young, inexperienced pitchers. His communcation with the pitchers is just phenomenal (Chen included!). The only thing you can knock is his bat. which is finally starting to come around. So perhaps if you'd like to reword and say not great OFFENSIVELY I'd be okay with that. But come on man... give the man some credit.
