@deadeyedesign, in the season before going to the O’s, Sosa had a 114 OPS+ and hit 35 home runs in only 126 games. Yes, his stats had been declining for a few years running, but he hardly looked washed up. The Orioles traded for him with some marginal prospects, the Cubs ate a big chunk of his salary, and Sosa even agreed to give up his guaranteed contract for 2006.

It seemed like a reasonable move by the Orioles, and certainly they could not have expected how badly he played for them.

I don’t get why you’re so incredulous. He was 36 years old, coming off a 1 (r)WAR season and had a -1.2 WAR season with the Orioles. Griffey is one of the greatest players of all time too, but what he did when he was 27 has nothing to do with what he would do when he was 36.

I wonder who gives him fashion advice? The one thing any self aware perma-tanned person learns is not to wear yellow. You’ll either look like a bee or look like you have liver trouble. Sammy needs to fire his fashion consultant or do something about being jaundiced (or possibly both).
