According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins are close to signing Matt Downs to a minor league contract. He’s expected to get an invitation to spring training.

Downs, who turns 29 in March, batted .202/.253/.371 with eight home runs, 16 RBI and a .623 OPS in 191 plate appearances with the Astros last season. Originally drafted by the Giants back in 2006, he owns a .230/.296/.406 batting line in the majors.

Downs offers some pop from the right side and versatility between the infield and the outfield, so he could make the Marlins in a super-utility role.

Nice to see somebody showed up to the job fair!

Does “pop from the right side” mean this guy pulls the ring off the top of the beer can with his right hand?

No, it actually does mean that he has some right-handed power. But not enough to stick with the Astros. That should make your blood run cold.

I’ve been taking injections of anti-freeze ever since the Toronto trade. I’ll be OK.

How many “utility guys” can one team have? Another inexpensive roster filler. Maybe we talk Charlie Hough off the golf course to come out and start the first game or does that spot go to Dice K. How much more of this nonsense can a fan base (term used lightly) take? Again, Mark Cuban please come save this franchise.

Including the Chihuahua, forty. I didn’t count the Iron Giant as a “utility guy.”
