Carlos Beltran would like to stay in St. Louis beyond 2013

Jan 21, 2013, 11:30 AM EDT

Carlos Beltran is under contract through this season. But he’d like to stay in St. Louis:

That’s well and good, but Cardinals prospect Oscar Tavares hit .321/.380/.572 at Double-A at the age of 20 in 2012, so he’s likely slated to take over right field for the Cards in 2014.

Nice problem to have if you’re the Cardinals, but it’s a problem all the same.

I think Carlos is a great player, but I believe that some of the money he would get
will be allocated towards Waino. From what I read, Oscar T can really play so I think this
decision really comes down to how well Oscar plays.

i like beltran but if hes willing to go year to year on team friendly incentive contracts that would be great.

He had a good 2012. But he’ll be 37, motoring on bad knees. I would say it is very dependent on his 2013. And how the Cards judge his likely drop off. He would be an outstanding fourth outfielder, but Carlos has always been about top dollar and they will probably decide not to pay him.

I think the probability of Carpenter returning after this year is much higher than that of Beltran.

Beltran is Berkman Part 2, a guy they’d love to have back if it made sense for both parties at a mutually beneficial price on a 1 year deal.

    But..

As Berkman’s said repeatedly – it’s always about the money and someone beyond the Cards will pay Beltran full time $$ to rake on a part time basis.

Beltran looked like a statue in RF for most of the year. He has DH written all over him.
