OG, I am only guessing here, but I am willing to bet that the Marlins bottom line in 2013 will be higher than teams like the Rays and the Orioles who may have success but will spend double or even triple what the marlins will spend. As long as they have to compete with teams like the Yankees, Phillies, Angels, Red Sox, etc, why should these small-market teams try to win when they simply can not consistently do so? Tampa is the outlier in this current system, and even they will probably never be able to get over the hump because they won't be able to keep all these guys together the way teams like the Yankees do.

I refuse to believe that Jeff Loria doesn't know the best way to make money. Sure, maybe he realizes he's useless at building winners and so he's going with what he knows. But then again, you can spend big money and not win, but revenue sharing's always there. Maybe Loria's taking the sure bet. Let revenue sharing provide the bulk of your income instead of increased tickets and concessions following a winner.

But all owners do these types of shenanigans.

Let me put it this way, given the choice between having John Henry back as owner or keeping Loria as owner I'd take Loria a million times and twice on Sunday.

Besides, again. It's the all star game. Who cares?

I'm just trying to figure out who hates and disrespects the Marlins more. Calcaterra or Jeff Passan over at Yahoo sports who quite simply hates everything about Miami

Actually, Loria has done his share of sticking it to the other owners, too. He ran the Montreal Expos into the ground, and when Selig wanted to make Marlins owner John Henry the owner of the Red Sox to keep it out Frank McCourt's hands, Loria got the Marlins, leaving MLB to run the Expos at a loss and find a new owner. Montreal was so poisoned, DC interests finally got the chance to steal the franchise.

Don't forget all the revenue sharing money Loria has been pocketing. He may have outdone former Mariners owner George Argyros in that department. At least the Commish engineered the cashiering of Argyros, getting Joan Kroc to agree to sell him the Padres, forcing him to sell the Mariners first, and getting Kroc to back out of the deal, leaving Argyros on the outside looking in. I don't know who pulled that off, Ueberroth or Giamatti, but it was brilliant. Why can't Bud Selig think up something like that?

I'm not saying guys aren't appealing in jeans and a T too, but sometimes it's nice to see something that requires a little more effort -- and that often indicates a higher level of self-care in a guy. I'd imagine it's like the difference for you in seeing a woman in a dress & heels instead of always in her comfy pants & oversized sweatshirt.

Wish I could agree with you so easily. The sad fact is, he really is a baseball fan - who also happens to be a corrupt, lying weasel. When Jeff Conine threw out J. T. Snow at the plate to clinch the playoffs for the Feesh, I was sitting not even five rows behind Scrooge McLoria in a field box and had a perfectly clear view of him. When Pudge's hand thrust up from the dust cloud with the baseball and the umpire rang Snow up, Scrooge leaped to his feet with both hands held high over his head, hands wide open as though trying to launch his fingers like a bunch of little skyrockets and spun around the face the crowd, and there was a look of such boyish, unalloyed joy on his face that it made me smile even more broadly than the just-concluded proceedings on the field.

Of course, this was before the...er...real Scrooge McLoria embittered us all by breaking his promise that there would be "no dismantling" - his own words; I heard him speak them at the Series victory parade a few weeks later - and the first of his several "market corrections" (the Chihuahua's phrase) and a litany of his misrepresentations and bunko schemes ensued. It would be easier to detest him if I had never seen that expression on his face. Unfortunately, as Nabokov noted, once it has been seen, it cannot be unseen. So if I want to detest him, I have to do it with the knowledge that there's a little kid with a big smile buried somewhere underneath all that viscid, grasping avarice. Ah well.

I'm insulted. One of the things I like about going to DC is seeing all the dudes in ties & jackets around...which is such a nice change of pace for me, as I am normally surrounded by guys in khaki pants (sometimes, not even pleated -- yea!) and golf shirts stretched tightly around a beer belly. HOTT!!!! But, okay, yeah, we're all gold-diggers.
