The Blue Jays sign Mark DeRosa to a one-year deal

Jan 22, 2013, 12:51 PM EDT

Mark DeRosa was injured last season when he high-fived Bryce Harper. But when you’re a loaded team going for it all, you need a rah-rah guy too, so:

A guaranteed major league deal for a guy who hit .188 with no homers in 101 plate appearances. Odd. But I guess DeRosa is still versatile and you could maybe do worse with a “final piece of the puzzle” kind of player.

The Jays needed a 25th man to sit at the end of the bench. Since whomever they signed was not going to play very much, they decided to go for a veteran who can play many positions and will be a positive influence in the club house.

I know this guy is supposed to be a great clubhouse guy- he was a great presence with the Giants for 2 years- but his wrist gives out carrying his plate from the clubhouse buffet- there is nothing left- it was brutal to watch in SF- as soon as he came back he would do something baseball related and you would see the trainers looking at his wrist- back to the DL. Couldn’t they just bring him in as some sort of coach or consultant and save themselves the roster spot?

I mean, it’s $750,000 so…not a big deal (in baseball terms at least), but DeRosa has been some kind of awful that past three years.

    Since 2010:
    121 Games
    302 PAs
    62 OPS+
    1 Home Run
    -1.5 WAR

I dunno, some players survive longer than they should solely based on their clubhouse presence. Carlos Baerga immediately comes to mind.

    “Mark, meet Brett.”
“Brett, meet Mark. He’s your new babysitter.”

I’ve heard he has a questionable social life, not surprised that he needs a nanny.

Ok. Sure. Why not? Will he hurt anything (besides himself)? Probably not. If The Beav really need the roster spot they can DFA or DL him (that last if he hasn’t done it on his own by May).

Opening day: 68 days. And counting.

Don’t forget to pull from the lazy-narrative file: “Mark DeRosa’s teams have made playoffs 5 of last 6 years” (pay no attention to such things as coincidence and correlation and go straight to causation).

Obviously, he’s the key to victory.

He got hurt high-fiving? You’re kidding. Really?
