The Phillies sign Delmon Young

Jan 22, 2013, 2:58 PM EDT

My prayers have been answered:

I think this was a masterful move by Ruben Amaro. With Young in the fold, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley will once again — by comparison anyway — look like their former MVP-caliber selves.  And, on a personal note, this is quite the accomplishment for Amaro inasmuch there were probably many people out there doubting that he could find any possible way to continue to block Domonic Brown. Well, Ruben showed them. He showed them good. Next year he’ll block Brown with an inanimate carbon rod.

Seriously, though: Delmon Young is a free agent who hit 22 18 home runs last year yet is making Mark DeRosa money. Heck, he’s making first-year arbitration-eligible player money.  You may beat the “hey, he’s not bad, he hits some homers and bats .270” drum all you like, but Major League Baseball just valued this guy at $750K, and that has to tell you something about what to expect.

UPDATE: For those of you saying that Domonic Brown won’t be blocked or that Delmon will only be a pinch hitter or bat boy or something:

He’s better off in the AL as a Designated Hitler.

      But he doesn’t hit.

Right field. Michael Morse lookout, you got competition for worst outfielder of the year award.

It’s a perfect place for this guy, he is a guy who has great character.

That said, he can now go out after hours, take cheap punches at people, throw bats, yell anti-Semitic remarks all he wants and he still may be the most upstanding citizen in Philadelphia…..

He’s an idiot but getting a guy who was 10th in MVP voting 2 years ago for 750K might be worth a shot. If he acts up, release him.

    • thehollar - Jan 22, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Ah yes, the mighty MVP-caliber season where he was worth 1.5 Wins Above Replacement.

  8. pogodog7 - Jan 22, 2013 at 5:27 PM

They will be throwing bagels at him in Philly

  9. thehollar - Jan 22, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Ruben Amaro: I will not stop until Domonic Brown is dead and buried.

well…in the world of major league baseball, that’s about what you’d expect…a cheap throw away sort of signing that doesn’t cost much if he shows up and continues to be delmon young.

on the other hand…he does still have the talent he had that made him so highly regarded. i doubt that he’s got the character it takes to bring it out, and to fruition…but, stranger things have happened.

i’m glad he’s not on my Tigers any more, i’ll say that.

    • thegreatstoneface - Jan 23, 2013 at 9:25 PM

did i read this right? there’s a weight clause that’s worth 600K? what happens if he doesn’t make weight, do they release him? fucker just signed…he was on my team last year, and i had to have big brother Meat on my team, too…no way he meets weight in another three or four weeks…

      i mean…if he makes weight, he’s got 600K. if not…what?

      humor his fat ass?

Brown can’t hit….period. Honestly, I’m still surprised he’s still on the the team. Should have dumped him for a pack of chewing gum when they had the chance.

    Braves are choke artists

Phillies really did go Young this offseason. Michael AND Delmon.

  15. Jeff - Jan 23, 2013 at 6:11 PM

Young has the potential to be a Gold Glove winner at shortstop.

  16. Minoring In Baseball - Jan 24, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Yeah, kind of surprised he went to a NL team. He had a good playoff for the Tigers last season, but just no room for him at DH or outfield. His off the field comments hurt him, too.

Great! I will pay to go see him play….. When is Delmon Young bobble head night?
