Aren’t too many people alive that saw Shoeless Joe play, I’m sure once everyone that saw Pete play pass on to the next life, the cry for him to get in will go away.

But if Joe Jackson was a hall of famer, then yes put him in too. List his stats, maybe a little blurb about why he’s named shoeless joe and then a nice big part about his involvement in World Series fixing.

Do the same to Pete. Put him in (hell, right next to Joe would be a good place), mention Charlie Hustle, the hits, and a nice big blurb about him betting on his own team and being banned from working in the game of baseball.

It a name I coined for the left. The “warm and fuzzy” party…if you will.
It makes me feel all “warm and fuzzy” to help everyone out. It makes feel all “warm and fuzzy” to prop people up with entitlements. I makes me feel all “warm and fuzzy” to do all the thinking for everyone. It makes me feel all “warm and fuzzy” to hold no one accountable for their own actions (or inactions).
Then I graduated high school and college, went to work in the real world, ultimately started my own business…and quickly figured out “warm and fuzzy” gets you a swift kick in the nuts. More specifically…it’s LaLa Land.

18th: Spot on. I don’t know that anyone has done so much with so little to work with.
Dude absolutely made himself into one of baseball’s best to ever play.
Joe Morgan said he has never played with (or seen) anyone play as hard as #14 on a pitch by pitch, out by out, inning by inning basis. Joe said Pete played every pitch and/or out like it was the 3rd out of a WS Game #7.

We must pray – sacrifice goats, if necessary (I’m an atheist myself but I understand why the Bush-Bush Supreme Court thought it was okay to kill dumb animals in the name of superstition anyway) – to keep the next commissioner from being anything remotely like a “protege” of the current drooling idiot in chief of baseball. Frankly, the owners get away with so much murder with this Alzheimer’s poster boy in charge that they’ll probably keep him in office like Norman Bates’ mother until a pigeon nests in one of his eye sockets and gives the game away.

I attended Game 4 of the 2002 World Series in San Francisco. I can tell Pete got the largest ovation by far out of all of the former players the attended the Memorable Moment’s Ceremony.

I can only imagine the ovation he would get in Cincinnati.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but Mr. Giamatti made a public statement that Pete Rose bet on baseball when an agreement was signed that there would be no finding saying Pete bet on baseball.

We all know Pete bet on the Reds. My argument is a signed agreement should be honored.

Pete could have made a mess of this and drug it out for a long time but for whatever reason signed the agreement which banished him. The common theory is Mr. Giamatti had a verbal agreement for a predetermined suspension time. Who knows for sure?

In my opinion Pete should be able to appear at official MLB functions and be eligible for the Hall of Fame but I do not think he should ever be able to be involved with any day to day operation of any MLB team.

In the event Pete ever gets elected to the Hall of Fame his plaque should state he admitted to betting on baseball.

My point is though things can always change. I don’t look at Rose signing off on that “lifetime ban” to be permament, I never believed that for a second. I always thought he’d sign the deal, and is banned for 5-10 years, then Bud does the right thing and at least honors him the way he should. After all, he did what he did after playing the game. He did his time, so let’s move on from this.

Steve Howe, I assume you mean. Is cocaine use worse than gambling? Mostly, yes.

But we’re not talking about penalties via the justice system. We’re talking about — for want of a less-lofty term — crimes against baseball. And conspiring to fix games is just about the worst baseball crime that’s out there. It’s so bad that a sport needs to put its foot down — hard — against things that appear to be a step in the direction of considering the possibility that someone conspired to fix games.

Is that, in the real world, worse than rape or murder or genocide? No. But MLB’s main task is the integrity of the game on the field. Rose’s punishment is appropriate. And he agreed to it.

Wow, did anyone else notice that Rose set the hit record on 9/11/1985. Maybe we can hold him responsible for that too. /sarcasm Eventually, MLB is going to have wake up and admit that the Bronze gods from the past now in Cooperstown were far from perfect. (Particularly Ty Cobb) Do we really know for sure that none of the players from days of yore bet on Baseball? Of course not, they just happened to not get caught. So also are players from the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s. Yes, betting on baseball is taboo, but so apparently are a lot of other things. Other players were banned and reinstated. I think we might let the All Time hit leader off the hook after almost 20 years banned.

I think what makes Rose such a compelling player is that no one would call him a pure hitter. I’m not sure what it even means (to be a pure hitter), but it seems to me that Rose’s successes on the field were driven by his passion and work ethic, not his natural talents.

Rose has been shunned by Bench, they never got along. Most others think it’s disgusting what he did and how he lied, but they realize he should be in the Hall.
What he did is embarrassing, but people who care about what he did for the Reds could care less if he has a ridiculous reality show now.

And you can’t buy a Rose jersey for the same reason you won’t see his number hanging in the rafters at Great American. MLB simply will not let them acknowledge Pete in any way.

Yes, it is certainly a sign of low intelligence to cheer for a hometown guy who hit more balls (What exactly is the goal of a batter? Oh yeah, HIT the ball) than anyone in the history of the game.

We’re such dummies for liking a guy for what he did on the field (4256, 3 WS wins, 1 WS MVP, 1 League MVP, etc.).

Put them all in the Hall. Pete should be in the Hall, but you address what took place. And there is no way he only bet on the Reds to win, not a chance. Put Shoeless Joe Jackson in the Hall. Put any guy who made the game great duing the steroid era in the Hall of Fame, otherwise strip those teams of wins, strip them of the awards,delete these players from the history of the game because of “cheating”. Punish the organizations for looking the other way by taking away division titles and World Series titles for using players who were found guilty or the writers have found gulty of using steroids.
