This really isn’t as big a deal as other commenters are making it out to be. There really aren’t any other options out there that the Indians could bring in, and they don’t have any young players who would be blocked by Thome or Hafner. They have an interest in giving Chris McGinnis (sp?) a shot, as he was a Rule 5 pick, but otherwise you’re looking at a rotation of Aviles/Gomes/Carrera and regulars on a half-day. Since they’ll do a bit of that anyway, the role shouldn’t be too demanding on Thome or Hafner, and they do have power and on-base upside that the rest of that crew lack.

The fact that Thome and Hafner are lefties is not an issue. The Tribe has added Mark Reynolds, Drew Stubbs, Nick Swisher, and Mike Aviles this winter and lost Choo. Tribe actually needs a lefty bat.

Bring Thome back, for sure. If nothing else, he’s a great influence in the clubhouse for a team trying to create some sort of identity for itself.
