I would NOT give up a high draft pick to sign a 30 yr old who hit .275 and 9 HR for a short term deal. That’s just crazy.
The fact that they’d have to surrender a high pick to sign him is even worse.

I think the other reason is that teams value their draft picks far more than ever before. And, related to your reason #1, that Bourn is a speed guy and they’re wary his speed will hold up as he gets deeper into his 30s.

The thing that caught my eye was the deferred money – the Phillies have about 90 trillion dollars coming off the rolls the next few years, so id derring to 2017 or so is on the table, that may be do-able. Of course, you have the robbing Peter to pay Paul issue that burned them in the past…..

I would do it though. His numbers have to be down to a reasonable figure now. And to those who will to say Delmon Young 19 times as a rebuttal, they aren’t commited to him for squat, so he is a non-factor is potentially going after Bourn.

I wouldn’t mind if the Phillies swoop in at the last minute and help Bor-ass save face. Nothing like he wanted at first, but a short-term high-priced deal would be something that would certainly make me feel better about the outfield. Because at this point, the Phillies outfield sucks.

I’ve been surprised the market was so bad for Bourn. If you look at Bref WAR, his performance over the last four years supported a large (15 MM$ish) payday. There’s a lot to like about him as a player. But the market sure looks cold. I can think of three possible contributors:

1. He thinks he can maintain performance longer than the GM’s do. They might be right. Strikeouts are creeping up and he never walked as much as a guy with his speed should.
2. Boras’ negotiating style. Enough said.
3. In spite of all the talk about defense, in the end the big contracts go to OPS+.

Michael is a fun guy to have in your outfield and can add a lot to the right team. But he’s sure not making the expected splash.

The Mets should win any appeal regarding the potential loss of pick number 11, as they really should have pick number 10. Unfortunately, the CBA did not envisage this situation. Otherwise, I just can’t see them giving up a first round pick for a player who will not help them contend.
