The question was not who would want those three – who are talented. The question is who would want those three over Hallday, Lee and Hamels.

One proven entity vs. Three. Zero Cy Youngs vs. Three. Zero Playoff MVP’s vs. Three. Three All Star appearances vs. Fourteen. You want me to keep going?

Look, I acknowldged elsewhere in this thread a certain degree of trolling here. But if you are going to compare the Nats and Phillies top 3 starters, all you can say in Nats favor is that injuries may hit the Phillies. And they may. But that could be said of your guys as well.

Not that I think it’s all that much better of an option, but I’d imagine B.J. Upton hits leadoff. Either way, looking at SB numbers isn’t how I’d evaluate a guy’s capability to fill the leadoff spot.

Also, it looks like Chris Johnson has a pretty nasty reverse platoon split, so I guess we’ll see Fredi “ride the hot hand” there. Doesn’t change my opinion that this was a good trade, especially when you look at the money and years of control involved. Prado is a good player and I know that, but giving him away is not likely to be the deciding factor for next season’s success.

Don’t get me wrong. I think Upton is a potentially great player, but the idea that the Braves are drastically better because of this seems odd to me when you factor in the loss of Prado. You gained something but you also lost something in what Prado gives you. Is the net positive of Upton so great when you lose Prado? I’m not so sure. They also lose Chippers production. To me they still may be about what they were last year, which is certainly more than acceptable, but people seem to think they’ve made up 10 games in the standings. The starting pitching other than Medlen is no lock either. Washington still has the most talent in the division with the Braves a solid 2nd and the Phillies needing alot of things to break right to compete for 2nd place (but very likely 3rd).

Prado finished 20th overall in the MVP vote last season. He was going to be their leadoff hitter and now they are probably going to put Simmons in that role who had a whopping 1 SB in 49 games last season.

I think a platoon of Chris Johnson and Juan Francisco could conceivably outperform the production you get out of playing Prado every day. It’s far from a lock, but it’s not crazy talk, either.

Let’s not get carried away here – the Phillies were not “saved” by anyone or anything last year. As dismal as that season was, they were 81-81, that is not a last place finish in any division in any year. In 1994, every single team in the AL West was 10 games below .500 or worse.

As for this year, if you want to bet against Halladay, be my guest. If you want to assume every signle position player will have significant DL times, be my guest

Agreed about Johnson. Kind of weird that Arizona wanted Prado, of all people, from that roster. And his departure just creates a hole where none existed for the Braves, necessitating yet more dealing before the season starts. That’s unsettling. But J. Upton has all-world talent, so he’s probably worth it and, unlike Michael Bourn, he can do lots of things well, in addition to getting on base, running, and playing solid D. It will be interesting to see how his hitting fares in the NL East parks this year. No real launching pads except Philly, which should put the “he’s a product of Arizona’s park!” theories to the test.

Interesting swap at 3rd base. Johnson can hit fairly well if he can remember there is an outside corner. It would help, though, if the Braves could come up with a 1st baseman about 12 feet tall for his throws across the diamond.

I do. And if the Phils were capable of staying healthy they’d have some fine pitching. But with the team’s other issues, even that isn’t enough to save them. 3rd place squad, saved from last place by the very existence of the Mets and Marlins.

Not so quick with the Prado at 3rd base Craig. Looks like he is being sent to Arizona as part of the deal. Now they have to go with Chris Johnson at 3rd base, which I think is a major downgrade at that position.
