The Diamondbacks are unlikely to trade for Tigers’ right-hander Rick Porcello

Jan 24, 2013, 8:05 PM EDT

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported earlier today that the Diamondbacks would try to flip prospect shortstop Nick Ahmed, one of the pieces from the Justin Upton deal, as part of a trade for Tigers’ right-hander Rick Porcello. However, Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers downplayed his interest in such a scenario this afternoon.

Assuming Towers holds firm, the fifth spot in Arizona’s starting rotation will come down to Patrick Corbin, Tyler Skaggs and the newly-acquired Randall Delgado. Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and Wade Miley project to occupy the other four spots. Daniel Hudson is currently making his way back from Tommy John surgery and should be ready to rejoin the rotation around midseason if all goes well.

I’m gonna take the low hanging fruit here and say he must not be gritty enough.

Not gritty enough? He bodyslammed Youk a few years back. It that’s not gritty enough then I don’t know what is.

Duh. Tigers already have SS prospects like that guy, better ones really. Porcello to SD is the way to IF they trade him….

Rumor was that the Tigers hadn’t pulled the trigger on him yet because they wanted a SS prospect in return. I didn’t even have to dig to find that, some fan you are.

Yah,Eugenio Suarez is better than this guy..profiles as a .270 hitter with speed and a little pop and won the MiLB Gold Glove for SS (that is for ALL of MiLB), Hernan Perez closer to the majors, same profile. The point was they have guys like this Ahmed guy. Reading comprehension, it’s your friend. Not being an ahole may be beyond you however.

If I am the Tigers, I just sit and wait for someone to offer to overpay. In all likelihood that would be closer to the trade deadline. Drew Smyly showed promise with a nice rookie year, but he pitched just under 100 IN.

I see no harm in allowing Porcello to sit in a 5th starter role. If the Tigers get real lucky, maybe he goes out and has a great first half and they can get a bit more.

Dixon Machado too….why do they need another iffy SS prospect? They didn’t some writer just needed to make his quota that day
