I worked in the Carolina League during the same time Marte was there, and there were several guys we had questions about. The team I worked for had a SS the club was excited about – 19, had good range and a little bit of pop. The next year, there was a guy on the team with the same skill set and I swear he looked exactly like the SS we had the previous season, only now he was 23 and went by a different name. He was released at the end of the season.

It makes you wonder if he was truly 16 when he signed. Add 4 years to his reported age and his failure to hit in the majors despite good minor league numbers makes it more understandable.

Now that that’s out of the way (it IS obligatory now, isn’t it?), I am stunned to see Marte talked about at all anymore. I remember, now, thinking that the trade that sent him to the AL was nuts and that Chipper was not going to last forever. Which one of those thoughts was more crazy in hindsight, I ask you?

I paid $405.00 for Marte’s game worn jersey when he was at Myrtle Beach. I have made better investments including other such jersies. Of course, I have also made other such purchases that didn’t work out. Nonetheless, Marte was special when he was a Pelican. I don’t regret the purchase. I wish him well.
